`Noles Fall To Duke 4-0

April 17, 2010

DURHAM, NC – The No. 15 Florida State women’s tennis team (12-7, 6-2) saw its 6-0 winning streak come to an end Saturday, April 17 as it fell to Atlantic Coast Conference rival No. 6 Duke 4-0 at the Ambler Stadium. The Seminoles will close out their season on Sunday as they face No. 1 North Carolina at 1 p.m.

In preparation for the post season, both squads decided to play in tournament form in which as soon as a team scores four points all other matches would cease play.

“We got off to a very slow start in doubles which unfortunately set the tone a little bit for the day,” FSU head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “When you have such a huge deficit against a top 10 team it’s difficult to come back from. They did do a good job fighting back in doubles on courts one and two. They put themselves in positions to get it done, but slow starts are a killer.”

The Blue Devils started the match strong by posting back-to-back doubles’ wins on courts three and two to earn the lead point into singles.

Court three saw Katie Rybakova and Amy Sargeant losing to No. 61 Reka Zsilinszka and Elizabeth Plotkin 8-2, while the twosome of Jessica Sucupira and Federica Suess fell to Mary Clayton and Monica Gorny 9-7 on court two.

“In singles, four of the six spots were pretty solid,” Coach Hyde said. “Duke was a little bit better than we were today by taking command and never letting up. We also had some good things too by a number of our girls playing well in a number of our spots.”

Giving the Blue Devils their second match point was Suess as the ‘Nole was defeated by Mary Clayton 6-2, 6-0 on court six.

Sargeant was the next Seminole to fall on court four as she lost to Amanda Granson 6-2, 6-4 to give Duke its third point.

The Blue Devils marked their fourth point as Sucupira was overpowered by Monica Gorny 6-4, 6-1 on court five.

“Tomorrow we have to rebound. We are excited about the opportunity this conference gives us to see top 10 teams,” Coach Hyde added. “We have to make sure we come out at front and not play catch up.”
