The third-seeded Americans – Nick Lucena and Phil Dalhausser went a perfect 3-0 in Pool C play, however it wasn’t easy. After two sweeps over Tunisia and Mexico, the Americans battled the Italians in a three-set thriller in order to win the pool and advance into the round of 16.But a few familiar faces have been cheering on the FSU alum in Rio.
Rising juniors Tory Paranagua and Vanessa Friere were seen along with FSU beach volleyball head coach Brooke Niles, who is married to Lucena.
Paranagua sent along her insights before tonight’s match:
“The first week was very exciting and thrilling. Vanessa and I were dressed up for Nick’s matches and the crowd wasn’t exactly with us haha. Below will be a funny picture of Vanessa and I (the only ones) excited about Nick’s win against the Italians; the Brazilian crowd likes to support the underdogs aside from themselves.
The first time Nick made his entrance, the war chant began to play loudly throughout the stadium and Vanessa and I completely lost it. We also made a sign that said “Nick the Quick” on it and yelled every chance we got, but honestly, they didn’t even need any help. Nick and Phil have been playing confidently from the start and I can’t wait to see what else they accomplish.”
Lucena and Dalhausser will play tonight in primetime on NBC at 11 p.m. against Austria,
