TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Top-ranked Florida State (26-5), winners of seven straight, will host No. 25 Florida (20-12) Tuesday, April 8 at 6:00 p.m. on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. The game marks the third and final time these two schools will meet during the regular season this year.
Tuesday’s game will air live on ESPN3 with Tom Block and Chip Baker providing all the live action.
Florida State is looking to snap a three-game skid to Florida as the Gators won last year’s meeting in Tallahassee and the first two games this year.
The Seminoles lead the all-time series 125-103-1, while Florida State is 71-39-1 against UF on its home turf. The Gators have won the last two meetings in Tallahassee. FSU is 2-2 in its last four games against Florida inside Dick Howser Stadium as all four games have been decided by three runs or less.
Tuesday marks the 230th meeting between these two schools as FSU is 29-22 over the last 51 games.
The series has been closely contested since 2008 as 17 of the 24 games during that span have been decided by three runs or less. FSU owns a record of 9-8 in those 17 games. Since 2010, Florida State has captured three of the last five season series from the Gators – taking 3-of-4 in 2010 & 2011 and 2-of-3 in 2013.
Having dropped the first two games to Florida this year, FSU is looking to avoid being swept by the Gators in the regular season for the second time in the last three years (2012).
Tuesday marks the third time this year that FSU will face UF as the top-ranked team in the nation. Dating back to 2008, FSU is 1-3 against Florida when ranked No. 1 (3/25/14 – L, 1-4; 3/18/14 – L, 1-3; 4/10/12 – L, 3-6; 4/15/08 – W, 4-2).
In Gainesville back on March 18, Florida defeated FSU 3-1 despite the Seminoles out hitting the Gators 9-6. It marked the first loss for the Noles this year when out hitting their opponents (18-1). The Seminoles were held to just one run on six hits in a 4-1 loss to the Gators in Jacksonville on March 25.
Jose Brizuela has been responsible for both of FSU’s runs in the first two games against UF connecting on a pair of solo home runs in each game. It marks the only two home runs hit by Brizuela this year. The junior third baseman tied a career-high with three hits in Gainesville.
Peter Miller has pitched well in two starts against the Gators this year but has been charged with the loss both times. The senior right hander has allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits in 10.1 innings while striking out 11. Miller got the start against Florida last year in Tallahassee and did not factor into the decision. He gave up two runs on five hits in 5.0 innings.
Florida will start LHP Danny Young (3-0, 1.96 ERA) on Tuesday night, while Florida State has yet to name its starting pitcher.
