Noles Look for Upset Against No. 3 Florida on Thursday

Tallahassee, Fla. – Looking for one of the biggest wins in school history, the 35th-ranked Florida State women’s tennis team hosts third-ranked Florida Thursday afternoon at 4:00 PM at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.

“We’ve been on a pretty good wave of momentum the last couple of weeks and have battled through some hostile crowds,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “It will be nice to play at home with our own crowd here and we’re excited about it.”

The Seminoles (5-1) host the Gators (1-0) for the second-consecutive season after Florida’s narrow 4-3 win in Tallahassee in 2015. The Seminoles are led by seniors Daneika Borthwick and Yukako Noi – the two are a combined 7-2 in the spring and a perfect 5-0 in doubles play as a pair. Sophomore Gabriella Castaneda is 4-1 in the spring and has won four doubles matches.

The Gators have one of the deepest lineups in college tennis. Florida has seven players ranked in the Top 125 in singles and three doubles teams ranked in the Top 50. Junior Belinda Woolcock (3), sophomore Brooke Austin (11) and junior Kourtney Keegan (25) are in the Top 25 singles, while Austin and Keegan for the fifth-ranked doubles pairing.

Last season, Florida State played one of its best matches of the season against Florida, pushing the second-ranked Gators to a deciding match before falling 4-3. Noi beat No. 13 Brianna Morgan in straight sets, while former Nole Kerrie Cartwright beat No. 3 Josie Kuhlman on Court 2, 6-2, 6-3. Daniela Schippers, who has yet to play a singles match this season due to injury, won for the Seminoles on Court 6.

“We’re expecting it to be another good competition like it was last year,” Hyde said. “We were five points from beating them and I expect a repeat this year. We’re excited for the battle and the opportunity.”

If inclement weather is in the area for Thursday, the match will be moved to the Indoor Tennis Facility at 2566 Pottsdamer Rd. Check the women’s tennis Twitter page @FSU_WTennis for more updates.
