WILMINGTON, N.C. (seminoles.com) –
The Florida State women’s golf team carded the fifth best team score of the second round and has moved into a tie for 10th place in the team standings with one round remaining in the 10th Annual Landfall Tradition on the Nicklaus Course at the Country Club of Landfall. The Seminoles moved up two spots in the team standings and are now the third ranked of six ACC teams in the event.
The Seminoles close the event and their fall season with Sunday’s third round as the play for their third consecutive top five finish of the season.
Purdue, which tied Duke for the best team score of the round, is in first place in the team standings with one round remaining to be played. The Boilermakers traded spots in the team standings with Auburn who is now in second place – two strokes behind Purdue. Victoria Trapani of Auburn carded a 73 in the second round and holds a three stroke lead in the battle for the individual title.
“We rebounded to play one of the best rounds of the day in really tough weather conditions,” said head coach Amy Bond. “All of our players fought really hard today and it was a great effort. Hopefully we gained some momentum heading into the final round and can use that to our benefit.”
Florida State is led in the individual standings by senior Maria Salinas and freshman Alex Milan who are both in a tie for 16th place in the individual standings with identical two round scores of 154. Salinas, on her 21st birthday, carded a 77 while Milan led the Seminoles with a 76.
On a day when none of the 90 golfers in the field finished with a score of even par or better because of the weather, Salinas (Lima, Peru) carded her second consecutive score of 77. She played 11 holes at par or better with two birdies as compared to only one birdie in the first round. Salinas carded fewer holes above par and more rounds at par or better in the second round as compared to the first round.
Milan (Lutz, Fla.) finished with a 76 as she improved her score by two strokes in the second round as compared to the first round. She played her best golf of the round on her front nine with two birdies and a one under par score before making the turn. Milan played 13 holes at par or better with two birdies – as compared to zero birdies in the first round.
Senior Hannah Thomson (Perth, Australia) carded a 76 in the second round – an improvement of four stokes from her score of 80 in the first round. She moved up a total of 27 spaces in the individual standings and begins play in the third and final round of the event on Sunday. Thomson began the second round in a tie for 53rd place and begins the final round in position to gain a top 25 finish.
Florida State will play with Ole Miss and Tulane in the final round. The Seminoles, Rebels and Green Wave will tee off at 9:20 a.m. from the 10th hole.
