`Noles Open ACC Play Against Miami

Feb. 25, 2011

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 28 Florida State men’s tennis team (5-4, 0-0) opens its ACC season on Saturday against No. 39 Miami. The match starts at noon and will be played at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. Last season the `Noles topped the `Canes 5-2 at Miami. While Miami holds a 45-13 record over Florida State, FSU is 8-3 against Miami since 2002.

“I think this match is big for a lot of reasons,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Miami is a big rival, along with Florida, so it’s one of our biggest matches every year. Our matches with them are always very tight so we have a very good rivalry with them. It also starts the ACC play for the season. You want to get your wins and stay up where you put yourself in the running to win the conference. It’s an important match to get off to a good start.”

The Seminoles are coming off a break but before that the team suffered three straight losses to teams ranked in the top seven of the country.

This year, the Seminoles have senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) ranked No. 26 and senior Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) ranked at No. 62. Mirzadeh is in the midst of an eight match winning streak. Mirzadeh and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) are ranked No. 13 in doubles play after posting a nine match winning streak to start the season.

Last season, Mirzadeh, Bowles and Smith each posted singles wins against Miami while the duos of Mirzadeh/Smith and Andres Bucaro/Anderson Reed secured the doubles point.

Admission to all matches is free. The first fans will receive a FSU tennis magnet.
