Noles Post a Pair of Wins Against SC State, North Florida

Jacksonville, Fla. (Tallahassee, Fla.) – The Florida State women’s tennis team notched a pair of victories Saturday in Jacksonville against South Carolina State (4-0 win) and North Florida (4-1 win). The Seminoles (5-1) were playing on the road for the third consecutive weekend to open the season. In the morning match against South Carolina State (0-1), Florida State posted identical 6-0 doubles scores from seniors Yukako Noi and Daneika Borthwick and Gabriella Castaneda and Ariana Rahmanparast.

In singles, Rahmanparast posted a double-bagel on Court 6 to make the score 2-0 FSU, while Noi (6-1, 6-0) and Castaneda (6-0, 6-3) also posted bagels in clinching the match for the Noles.

Against UNF (1-1), the Seminoles dropped the doubles point for just the second time this season, but answered with four wins in singles to take the match 4-1. Rahmanparast, Borthwick, Castaneda, and Noi each won in straight sets against the Ospreys to move the Noles to 5-1 on the year.

Head Coach Jennifer Hyde:
“The girls did a great job of taking care of their courts today and accomplished the mission that we set out at the beginning of the day. We were very efficient in our first match against South Carolina State. In our second match, UNF came out competing at a very high level and was very feisty in the doubles. They were more aggressive than us at some big points. I was very happy with how the girls responded in singles and took some very quick and early leads in singles and put their foot down on the gas pedal and didn’t let up.

“Some very complete matches and focus. We’ll get the girls rested and a couple really good days of practice under our belt before we step on court Thursday to play third-ranked Florida. We had a great 4-3 match with them last year and we’re excited to get a huge crowd out to cheer us on.”

The 5-1 start includes three wins over ITA-ranked teams (Old Dominion, Tulane, and Portland). The ODU and Tulane matches were on the road, matching the number of road wins against ranked teams the Seminoles had in 2014 and 2015 combined.

The Seminoles open the home portion of their schedule Thursday, February 4, against No. 3 Florida at 4:00 PM. at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
