TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State women’s tennis came out with a solid first day at the Seminole Quad held at the Scott Speicher Center winning both of their doubles matches and three out of five matches in singles. “I thought we did a good job today,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde.”I felt like we came out very well in doubles and set the tone in all of our matches.”

Florida State’s young duo of sophomore Francesca Segarelli and freshman Ruth Seaborne defeated University of Central Florida’s Jenny Fisell and Alexis Rodriguez 8-3 in doubles while Seminole senior’s Federica Suess and Katie Rybakova defeated the nations No. 44 tandem in UCF’s Genevieve Lorbergs and Courtney Griffith 8-5.

In singles sophomore Francesca Segarelli, the 2010 ACC freshman of the year, defeated the nations No. 70 ranked player in Iowa’s Sonja Molnar by the score of 6-1, 6-4. Senior Federica Suess defeated Alexis Dorr in a hard fought tiebreaker 6-0, 6-6 (9-7).

“We also did a good job in singles,” said Hyde. “We had some matches that were tight in some spots where we had to play some big points really well and I felt like we did just that. We competed hard, and took advantage of having a pretty decent crowd here on a cold afternoon.”

“It was really exciting to get into back into it, everyone was ready to play and it was a good day for tennis,” added Suess. “It is always good to come out well in preparation tournaments like this, that is where you get your confidence for the season, so obviously it is good to have some wins under your belt.”

After winning her first match in doubles, freshman Ruth Seaborne also won her first singles match as a Seminole, defeating Iowa’s Lynne Poggensee-Wei 6-0, 6-3.

“It was a really great day,” said Seaborne.”I have been really excited about this for a long time as I haven’t played a match since August, so it was really exciting to get back out there for the first time in months and felt good to get the win.”

While the play by Seaborne didn’t appear to be that of a first time player, she admitted to some first day jitters. “To be honest I was a little bit nervous this morning, but was more excited than anything and was just ready to bring it on,” said Seaborne.

“I felt comfortable out there and felt like I had something to prove to the team, show them what I can do, and I think I did that.” Seaborne’s teammates were not at all surprised by her early success. “Yeah it was exciting (on Seaborne’s first win),” said Suess.

“We have been practicing together so we know that she is a good fit and a good player, so it wasn’t really a big surprise.”

The Seminoles will return to action tomorrow for the second day of competition starting at 11am.
