Noles Seek Program Mark on Monday

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – No. 7 Florida State Women’s Basketball (13-1, 1-0) goes for a program milestone on Monday evening against NC State (11-3, 1-0) at the Donald L. Tucker Center. FSU is looking to win its 13th game in a row, which would eclipse the previous best streak of 12 straight victories by the 2004-05 team (Nov. 19-Dec. 28, 2004).

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the game being live streamed on the ACC Network Extra. Tom Block and Melissa Bruner will be on the call, while Jonathan Schillace and Bob Thomas carry the radio broadcast on WQTL 106.1 FM and via the free Seminole Gameday App.

Monday’s game is “First Responders Night,” where a first responder’s badge or other form of identification at the door allows for a $3 ticket.

The Seminoles’ 12-game winning streak is currently the sixth-longest streak in the nation, with UConn’s 87-game streak being the longest by far. FSU’s win streak is the second-longest in the ACC, as No. 19/20 Virginia Tech holds the conference’s longest winning stretch at 13 straight games.

Florida State looks to win its third game in a row over the talented Wolfpack on Monday night. The Pack leads the all-time series 27-15 and is coming off an eye-opening 70-62 win over No. 2 Notre Dame on Dec. 29 at home, snapping the Fighting Irish’s streak of consecutive ACC victories at 35.

FSU has defeated NC State eight times in the last 11 meetings since 2008. In last year’s 56-52 nail-biter at Broughton High School, point guard Leticia Romero came through in the clutch. She broke a 49-49 tie with a 3-pointer with 1:15 left, then added an insurance layup to make it 54-49 with 28 seconds left. Romero finished with 15 points (6-of-11) and four assists.

Florida State’s 13-1 start to the season has become a welcomed trend. FSU has won 13 of its first 14 games in three of the last four seasons, also doing it in 2013-14 and 2014-15.

The Seminoles have won nine of their last 11 ACC home openers since the 2005-06 season. Last year’s ACC home-opening win over Boston College (W, 75-42) on Jan. 7, 2016, began an 11-game win streak which is now the third-longest win streak in program history. However, all 11 wins came against ACC schools to mark the longest ACC win streak in program history.

A few Seminoles have posted quality individual performances against NC State in year’s past. In FSU’s 72-52 win over NC State on Feb. 26, 2015, Brittany Brown tied her career high with 12 rebounds. In junior forward Shakayla Thomas’ two games against the Pack, she is averaging 16.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and shooting 48.4 percent (15-of-31) from the floor.

NC State’s last trip to Tallahassee in 2015 included another program benchmark for Florida State Women’s Basketball. The 72-52 win gave FSU an undefeated home record in the regular season for the first time ever (14-0) and allowed it to reach a then-program record 13 ACC wins (FSU would finish 14-2 in the conference in that 2014-15 season).

FSU and NC State are two of five ACC schools with a scoring margin greater than 20 points per game, joining Duke (+27.3), Notre Dame (+21.8) and Virginia Tech (+20.4).

Following Monday’s game, FSU turns around and faces North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Thursday, Jan. 5, at 7 p.m. on the ACC Network Extra.
