TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The (RV/18) Florida State University cross country teams will travel to Boone, North Carolina to compete in the Covered Bridge Open hosted by Appalachian State University on Friday evening to kick off the 2021-22 season.
FSU is familiar with the Covered Bridge Open as the Noles swept the previous three competitions from 2017 to 2019. These finishes contributed to the 11 sweeps earned in the past 20 years at this race.
“Every year we open the season at this meet,” FSU head coach Bob Braman said. “It’s a huge break from our heat and high humidity in Tallahassee, and it’s a perfect low-key opener for our teams. There are always solid teams at this meet, including the Mountaineers.”
Both races feature runners from 12 schools with the women’s 5K race set to begin at 5:00pm and the men’s 8K at 5:45pm.
Both squads are back just six months after the 2020 season concluded in March of 2021 at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The women have the tools to improve on the 15th place finish as they return a pair of All-Americans in senior Maudie Skyring and junior Rebecca Clark. Skyring placed 23rd in the women’s 6K and Clark took 40th.
Entering this season, the women are ranked 18th nationally in the USTFCCCA poll and third in the South Region.
The men’s team received votes in the national pre-season poll and is ranked second in the South Region, led by senior Adriaan Wildschutt, who was the 2020 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships individual runner-up.
