TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 2014 Florida State men’s tennis team opened the season with a pair of wins on Saturday. The Seminoles (2-0) beat both North Florida and Mercer 4-0 at the Indoor Tennis Facility on the campus of Florida State University.

“We were sharper in the afternoon with our guys playing better in their second matches,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We have two more matches tomorrow and still have a lot of guys to play so we’ll keep mixing our line-up to give everyone an opportunity. Our depth will be an asset this year.”

The No. 36 Seminoles started the day against No. 71 North Florida. The team had a slow start but was able to quickly gain control of the match with the first win of the year from freshman Jose Gracia with a 6-2, 6-1 score over Pablo Tellez on court six. Junior Dominic Cotrone followed behind him with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Caio Gomez on court two.

Sophomore Michael Rinaldi upped the score to 3-0 when he took down Zach Goldberg 6-3, 6-2 on court five. Only moments later senior Blake Davis clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win on court three against Jack Findel-Hawkins.

“Today was a great day,” said Davis. “It was fun to be a part of a team that put it out on the line and performed well. I’m looking forward to what we accomplish this year and hope I am able to contribute to a quality team.”

In the afternoon, the Seminoles ran back on the court and got wins from a couple different players. Sophomore Marco Nunez got his first win as a Seminole when he defeated Anderson Scarpa 6-1, 6-1 on court one.

“It feels good to get the first team win as a Seminole,” said Nunez. “The whole team is playing well and our coaches are doing an awesome job helping us out on court. I’m excited for the matches tomorrow.”

Gracia and Cotrone won their second matches of the day, one after another, to make the match 3-0. Gracia topped Arsav Mohanty 6-2, 6-1 on court five while Cotrone won on court one 6-4, 6-2 over Oliver Snaider.

“I’m feeling accomplished after waiting over a year to get a win for the Seminoles and now I can’t wait to get back to the courts tomorrow,” said Gracia.

No. 61 Benjamin Lock finished out the match by defeating Arnav Mohanty on court two 6-4, 6-2.

Because of the rain, singles was played first with doubles only being played in the event of a tie. The Seminoles return to action Sunday at 9:00 a.m. against South Alabama and will be played at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
