TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 19th ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (10-2, 1-0) earned their first ACC win of the season with a 4-0 shutout over Clemson (6-5, 0-1).
“We got a good team effort today,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We are playing a lot of guys who have not played a lot of matches and to see them come through is encouraging.”
The Noles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after taking their ninth doubles point of the season. Junior Alex Knaff and sophomore Sebastian Arcila got the Noles on the board in doubles with a 6-4 win on court one. It was their second win in a row as a pair and third this spring.
Clemson rebounded by taking court two 6-3. Florida State quickly bounced back to take court three and the doubles point. Sophomore Chase Wood and freshman Richard Thongoana earned their third win of the spring as a pair with their 6-4 win on court three.
The Noles took it to the Tigers in singles, earning quick wins on courts one, four and five to clinch the match. Redshirt senior Lucas Poullain did what he does, improving to 6-0 this spring for his 30th dual match win in 31 tries with a 6-1, 7-5 win on court one. Thongoana followed him up with an easy 6-1, 6-3 on court four. Wood finished off the Tigers with a quick win of his own 6-1, 6-2 on court five.
“Richard with Chase clinched the doubles and both had a very impressive performance in singles,” said Hultquist. “Chase had maybe one of his best matches, winning 6-1, 6-2 against an experienced player. He was very dominant, kept the ball deep and finished around the net. You get what you always get with Lucas. He is very consistent and I like how he kept taking balls out of the air today.”
The Noles will be back in action next weekend as they head to Georgia Tech (March 1) and Oklahoma (March 3).
