TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 44 Florida State men’s tennis team extended their winning streak to increase their record to 5-0. The Noles were victorious over South Alabama after a 1:15 fog delay with a 4-0 win. Later in the night FSU faced UAB and won 6-1 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Courts.

“It’s been a long day,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We had a delay in the morning and then played two matches. One of the things I challenged them with was concentration. We competed for a lot of hours here and some people played a lot of tennis. That helps them to prepare the rest of the season now that we don’t have any more doubleheaders.”

In doubles play against South Alabama, junior Anderson Reed and freshman Dominic Cotrone came off the courts first with an 8-1 win over Daniel Leitner and Christian Kuehne on court two. Junior Andres Bucaro and freshman Benjamin Lock clinched the doubles point defeating Hanno Bartsch and Dauw Kruger 8-5 on court three. Junior Jordan Kelly-Houston and sophomore Blake Davis closed it out on court one winning 8-6 against Romain Bocaert and Alex Bernard.

The Seminoles put singles 1-3 on the courts and fed in the other matches while UAB and Furman played on the other three courts. Coming off first for Florida State was Davis who put up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Bernard on court two. Bucaro followed his lead after winning 6-2, 6-3 against Bartsch on court three. Playing in the fourth spot and clinching the match was freshman Cristian Gonzalez Mendez who beat Leitner 6-1, 6-1.

Later in the day Florida State squared off against UAB and battled hard in doubles to pull out a win on all three courts. With each match tied at 4-4, the Seminoles pulled away with Kelly-Houston and Davis and Cotrone and Reed each winning 8-4 moments after one another. Bucaro and Lock continued to battle back and forth to a tiebreaker. In the tiebreak the duo was down 5-1 but came back to win it 8-6.

“UAB had pretty good doubles teams and kind of took it to us,” continued head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “They were up breaks on both courts one and three. Then I felt like we really got our game going. I was really pleased with Andres and Benjamin given the fact we already won the doubles point and saved five match points to win their match. That showed a lot of heart and determination that they didn’t want to lose that.”

In singles play the freshmen battled hard and went 3-0 without dropping a set. Dominic Cotrone came off first with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Lucas Dirube on court five. Benjamin Lock defeated James Gardner 6-0, 6-3 on court six. Gonzalez Mendez closed it out for the freshmen with a 6-3, 6-2 win on court three against Chris Helliar.

“I think we practice really hard and bring a lot of effort in practice with a lot of experienced people in our team,” said Gonzalez Mendez. “We go out there and fight hard. We need to be focused in the matches if we want to win.”

On court four Reed won 6-1, 6-3 against Daniel Moser while Kelly-Houston closed the night with a 7-6(7), 6-3 win over Danny Manlow on court one.

Florida State closes out the Seminole Quad tomorrow as they face Furman at noon. All matches are played at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. Call (850) 645-GAME for updates. Follow the team on twitter at twitter.com/fsu_mtennis.
