TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –The Florida State men’s tennis team takes on rival No. 22 Florida on Wednesday at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville. This marks the 75th match between the two teams with Florida leading 54-20.
“We’re looking forward to the opportunity to renew our rivalry,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Florida has had a good year so far and we’re excited about the opportunity to play. Having each recruited the same guys, both teams know each other’s strengths and weaknesses which will make this an interesting match.”
The two rivals have competed almost every year since 1956 against each other with Florida winning the last six meetings. Florida State last won in 2007 during the regular season. No. 36 Florida State holds an 11-2 record while Florida is 4-4.
Florida State doubles team of senior Blake Davis and junior Dominic Cotrone moved up 26 spots in the rankings and is No. 23 in the nation this week. The Gators have three singles players ranked, No. 28 Stephane Piro, No. 62 Elliott Orkin and No. 65 Spencer Newman. Orkin and Gordon Watson are ranked No. 9 in the nation in doubles with Piro and Michael Alford at No. 26.
Announced today by the Atlantic Coast Conference was junior Cotrone being named as the Male Tennis Player of the Week. After returning to the court for the first time in two weeks, No. 112 Cotrone won both of his singles matches in straight sets. In his first match of the conference season, Cotrone opened with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Georgia Tech’s Nathan Rakitt. Then ranked No. 51 in doubles play, he and Davis teamed up to upset the No. 15 team of Carlos Benito and Eduardo Segura of Georgia Tech 8-6.
Cotrone is 10-3 this spring in singles with Davis behind him at 7-3. Freshman Grayson Goldin holds a perfect 9-0 record in singles this spring having not lost since October. Junior Cristian Gonzalez Mendez is also having a great year with a 19-2 this year including an 8-1 mark this spring.
