TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The second round of the Seminole Intercollegiate proved to be moving day as North Carolina moved into first place in the team standings and Rhys Davies of East Tennessee State took over the individual lead with 36 of the 54 scheduled holes of the event now complete at the Golden Eagle Country Club. North Carolina shot the best team round of the day (281) to move from sixth place into first where then will begin third round play with a one stroke lead over Auburn. Davies carded a second round 68 and moved from a tie for 16th after the first day into first after 36 holes. He begins play in the final round with a one stroke lead over Reed Darsie of North Carolina.
Florida State, the host team, also made moves of their own as they moved from ninth place to fourth place in the team standings as they shot a 286 team score. Sophomore Nicholas Smith moved from a tie for 46th place to a tie for fifth place in the individual standings as she shot a two-under par score of 70.
North Carolina was led by Darsie as it carded the best team score of the second round. Darsie was not alone as teammates Branden Barry shot a three-under par 69 to move into a tie for 18th place and Martin Ureta shot an even par 72 and moved into a tie for 12th place in the individual standings. The Tar Heels’ top four golfers are all in the top 35 of the individual standings.
Davies also made a large move in the individual standings as he shot a four-under par 68 in the second round. He has a two-day total of 141 after carding a one over par 73 in the first round. Davies moved from a tie for 16th place after the first round into first place heading into the third round. He is looking to earn the individual title in the Seminole Intercollegiate for the second time during his career after claiming medalist honors in 2005. He finished in sixth place in the event in 2006.
Sophomore Nicholas Smith is in a tie for fifth place in the individual standings to lead the Seminoles. He carded a two-under par 70 in the second round and has a 143 total for the first 36 holes. Smith begins play in the third round only two strokes behind Davies in the chase for the individual title. Junior Jonas Blixt carded a four-under par 68 and moved into a tie for 12th place in the individual standings with a 145 total. He is only four strokes behind the individual leader.
The final round of the event begins at 7:30 Tuesday morning.
