CLEMSON, S.C. — Marking the 23rd time in her career that she has finished a match with 20 kills, including nine times at FSU, senior Payton Caffrey helped lead RV Florida State (13-6, 7-3 ACC) to a four-set win on the road over Clemson (10-11, 4-6 ACC) by the score of 15-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-21. It is the 13th consecutive win for the Seminoles over the Tigers, dating back to 2011.
After dropping the first set to the Tigers, FSU posted a .367 hitting percentage with 48 kills, while limiting the Clemson attack to a .107 clip in sets two to four.
“The first set was a leftover from Friday night, and we really struggled at times this weekend to play up to our potential.” said FSU head coach Chris Poole. “There are so many things a student-athlete has to deal with during a season and they have to learn to stay focused in the moment to play consistently. I’m proud to see the players make a change on our side of the net and play awesome for the last three sets this afternoon.”
A kill by Jasmyn Martin gave Florida State a 3-2 early on in the first set, but Clemson went on a 10-2 run to break out to a 12-5 lead. Kills by Caffrey and Taryn Knuth, along with blocks by Emma Clothier and Martin, kept the Noles in the set, but the Tigers took the first frame, 25-15.
The Seminoles bounced back and opened a 15-4 lead in the second set after kills by Martin, Caffrey and Morgan Chacon, as well as a block by Clothier and Caffrey. Clemson cut into the lead, shrinking the FSU lead to five at 18-13, but the Noles scored seven of the last nine points, including kills by Clothier and Martin, to even the match with a 25-15 win in set two.
Florida State used a 5-0 run to create a 7-4 advantage to begin the third set, including kills by Deja Williams and Chacon. FSU grew the lead to 10-6 after consecutive blocks by Williams and Knuth, as well as a service ace by Chacon. The Seminoles led by seven at 19-12 after Caffrey’s 11th kill of the match, and the Noles maintained that lead to take the third set by the score of 25-18 on a kill by Chacon.
The Noles began the fourth set with a 5-2 lead with a kill by Caffrey and a block from Martin and Knuth. A 7-0 run by the Seminoles, including another ace by Chacon, blossomed the lead to nine at 14-5. Clemson rallied and scored six of the next seven points to cut the FSU lead to four at 15-11. The Noles grew the lead to 23-17 on a kill by Caffrey, and while Clemson got within three at 24-21, another Caffrey kill secured the match with a 25-21 win.
Knuth posted a .611 hitting percentage while tying a season high with 12 kills, while Chacon also had 12 kills to mark the third time this season that the Noles have had three players with double-digit kills. Adrian Ell recorded a team-high 29 assists, while Lily Tessier had 22. Taylor Roberts and Chacon finished with 12 digs apiece, while Clothier ended with seven blocks as the Noles posted 12 blocks in the match.
