Tallahassee, Fla. – Just a week after being named a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award and Dick Howser Trophy, Buster Posey added to his list of potential postseason accolades as he was named one of 50 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award as announced by USA Baseball. This year will mark the 31st consecutive year that the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award has been presented to the nation’s premier amateur baseball player.

Posey currently leads the nation in three offensive statistical categories including batting average (.471), on-base percentage (.571) and slugging percentage (.858). He also ranks in the top 10 in total bases (2nd), hits (2nd), runs (5th) and runs per game (6th).

In the ACC, the junior catcher also leads in eight categories while ranking in the top 10 in three others. He finished the regular season batting .479 in 30 league games as he led the Seminoles to their second straight Atlantic Division title and the number two overall seed in the ACC Baseball Championship.

Posey has also had a stellar season on the defensive end posting a .981 fielding percentage with 53 starts behind the plate. He is throwing out 41.5 percent of would be base stealers on the year while registering six pick offs. The right hander has also made eight appearances on the mound and is a perfect 6-for-6 in save opportunities. Posey has struck out 10 batters and has not allowed a run in 7.1 innings of work.

In total, 40 colleges and universities are represented on the 2008 semifinalist list. Among conferences, the Southeastern Conference is tops with nine players on the list followed by the Atlantic Coast Conference with eight.

The names of the 50 semifinalists will now be forwarded to a voting body of 125 who will select the five finalists and the eventual 2008 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award winner. Fans can follow the progress of the Golden Spikes Award online at as the list of 50 players is narrowed to five finalists on Tuesday, June 3, en route to the announcement of the year’s winner on Wednesday, July 16.
