ROME, Georgia – No. 32 Florida State men’s tennis (16-9) beat No. 35 Notre Dame (16-12) 4-3 in the second round of the ACC Tournament behind a stellar three-set effort from Loris Pourroy to clinch the win.
“It was a great college match,” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “I was really pleased with our resiliency after losing the doubles point. I thought our guys did a great job battling back.”
The 89th-ranked doubles pair, Joshua Dous-Karpenschif and Maks Silagy, won on court one, but the Noles dropped the doubles point as a team.
Sebastian Arcila claimed the first point for the Noles in singles with a solid 6-3, 6-2 win on court four. Dous-Karpenschif fought back from an early deficit to win a tiebreak in the first set and finish out a straight-set win. Andreja Petrovic also earned a comfortable win on court two versus No. 119 Aditya Vashistha for the Fighting Irish.
“I loved how Joshua put his guy away quickly in the second,” Hultquist shared. “I thought we had a great effort from Sebastian Arcila today. Andy got us the third point, and I felt like he really controlled the match.”
The match was decided on court one between familiar foes No. 58 Loris Pourroy and No. 57 Axel Nefve. Pourroy won the first set but fell in the second. He battled back to win the third and claim the knockout win for the Seminoles.
“It came down to one, and I thought Loris, down a break 3-2, really stepped up his game,” Hultquist said. “Those guys have played several times, and it’s always a battle. Their guy is a great player, and Loris came through with the break at 5-4 in the third.”
Next up for Florida State is the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament, Virginia, on Friday at 10 a.m. The Noles fell to Virginia 4-2 a few weeks ago but handed the Cavaliers only their second loss in doubles to an ACC opponent this season. FSU has faced Virginia nine times in the ACC Tournament.
