TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Day three of the Seminole Invitational ended with the Seminoles taking the doubles title. The men’s tennis team ended the tournament with all six participating players reached a finals match.

“Having six guys play in the tournament and having all of them reach a final is a great effort,” said associate coach Nick Crowell. “One of our goals was to win one of the events this weekend and to have six guys in that position was a great accomplishment. We’re really pleased with our guys right now with how hard they are working on the track and in the weight room. We hope to build off of that going into the regionals.”

The semifinals of doubles started with junior Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and sophomore Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) defeating Salif Kante and Levan Clark of Florida A&M 8-4. The other semifinals match was junior Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) and freshman Dominic Cotrone (Bradenton, Fla.) against senior Jason Zafiros (Bradenton, Fla.) and redshirt sophomore Brian Alden (Barrington, Ill.). Cotrone and Reed came out on top and won 8-2.

In the finals, it was Bucaro and Davis pitted against Reed and Cotrone. The duos battled back and forth but Reed and Cotrone came out on top 8-5 to win the title.

“It’s apparent that the team is really gelling together,” said Reed. “We all like to see each other win. All of us playing in all the finals today, that doesn’t happen very often. You always want to see the freshmen step up. My partner was a freshman in the doubles and we ended up winning it. That just fuels the rest of the team’s confidence.”

“Today was probably one of the cleanest matched we’ve played,” said Cotrone. “We’re just starting to get the kinks out of our game. It’s easy for me to play well with Anderson because he knows the college game of doubles which is different than what I’m used to.”

In the Singles A Draw Championship match, Zafiros fell short to Kante of Florida A&M 6-1, 6-3 while Alden lost a close three set match in the B Draw Finals to Blake Gregor of South Alabama 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Junior Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) and freshman Cristian Gonzalez Mendez (Santiago de Compostela, Spain) compete tomorrow at the ITA All-Americans at the University of Tulsa.
