TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The Florida State football team conducted its second full scrimmage for the spring season Saturday morning at Doak Campbell Stadium. The scrimmage, which lasted approximately two hours, began with position drills before moving into the offense vs. defense drills.
“I think it was a pretty good scrimmage,” said head coach Bobby Bowden. “There were some pretty darn good plays out there today. I thought collectively they got better. You gotta feel better after 11 practices. You’re supposed to get better after 11 practices and I think they all have gotten better.”
Redshirt-sophomore Chris Rix highlighted the offense and led all passers, as he went 7-for-11 with 126 yards and two touchdowns. Rix led the first-team offense to a touchdown in the first possession of the scrimmage with a 31-yard strike to sophomore wide receiver P.K. Sam. Later in the day Rix hit Sam 35 yards down field for the duo’s second touchdown connection.
“Chris Rix had an excellent day,” commented Bowden. “He had two touchdowns off the bat and threw two more, which I thought we should have caught. He’s held his ground, but the others [quarterbacks] have made improvements. If they all stay healthy, they’ll get better, nobody has maxed out.”
For the day, Sam caught four balls for 87 yards and two TDs. Fellow sophomore receiver, Craphonso Thorpe led the receivers in receptions with four.
On the ground, senior Lamar Parish led the Tribe with 36 yards on seven carries. Redshirt-freshman Willie Reid turned in 34 yards on 14 attempts, while walk-on George Shuler rushed for 20 yards on two carries.
The defense was not to be outdone, however. Sophomore defensive end Eric Moore led the way with a sack and two tackles for loss. For the day, the Seminoles’ defense turned in six sacks. Near the end of the scrimmage, the defense managed to keep the offense from scoring with two big fourth-down stops. Senior Jerel Hudson had the defensive play of the day when he picked off Adrian McPherson in the end zone on a fourth a goal situation.
Following the full scrimmage, the team moved on to work on redzone drills from the 20-yard line. During the drill, redshirt-sophomore quarterback Fabian Walker went 3-for-3 for 13 yards and a touchdown to sophomore tight end Paul Irons.
The scrimmage ended with goal line drills. The offense and defense nearly split as the offense scored four out of seven times.
