Robert Morgan Is Out For The Season

Aug. 14, 2001

The Florida State Seminoles suffered a blow during two-a-day practices on Tuesday as senior receiver Robert Morgan tore his left anterior cruciate (ACL) and lateral collateral (LCL) ligaments going for a jump ball during morning session drills. Morgan will undergo surgery next week and will miss the entire 2001 season. Morgan has recorded 41 career receptions for 696 yards and three touchdowns over the last three seasons and was listed first on the depth chart at split end entering preseason drills.

“He (Morgan) had an MRI around Noon and I just couldn’t believe it,” Head Coach Bobby Bowden said following Tuesday evening’s practice. “It seems like we get more guys hurt without pads than we do with pads. There goes one of your receivers, it’s amazing how it is. Here, we’re out here practicing, we’ve got four receivers coming back and three of them can’t practice. One of them’s out for the year and the other two will be slowed up for awhile.”

Both Atrews Bell and Talman Gardner suffered mild hamstring strains on Monday and were held out of practice on Tuesday.

“So, anyway, we’ll just have to go from there,” Bowden said. “I’m just sitting up there thinking of alternatives (like) Anquan (Boldin) playing two positions. I can’t give him up at quarterback, but we’ll just have to see what happens. These freshmen might come through big time or something. We’ll just have to keep on it. There’s adjustments we’ll have to make just as time goes.”

The Seminoles conducted a 24-period practice in shorts this morning followed by an 18-period evening session. The squad will practice in pads for the first time on Wednesday, wearing shells in the morning.

In Tuesday’s morning passing drills, Chris Rix went 8-for-11 with one interception (Leroy Smith) while Boldin was 3-for-10.

“I thought they threw and caught better,” Head Coach Bobby Bowden said. “It was pretty good practice. Both quarterbacks looked better today, but the gap is still there. No one is closing in on anybody. It’s a good battle.”

Without Morgan, Bell and Gardner, the majority of the morning practice was with the young receivers.

“The freshmen (receivers) don’t know what to do yet and need the work,” Bowden said. “At least the older guys already know what to do and won’t be so behind, but we need to get them out there.”

In 7-on-7 drills in the evening workout, Rix went 8-for-12 while Boldin was 7-for-10, including going deep to both Craphonso Thorpe and P.K. Sam. Bryant McFadden recorded the only pass break up. In 1-on-1 drills, both Rufus Brown and Gennaro Jackson recorded interceptions.

Injury Report: The following players will be held out of practice on Wednesday: William McCray, Willie Jones, Talman Gardner, Atrews Bell while Carver Donaldson (groin), Randy Golightly (back bruise) and Ray Piquion (ill) will be reevaluated in the morning.
