Rodriguez Captures ACC Player of the Week Honors

Nov. 26, 2012

TALLAHASSE, Fla. – Following an outstanding weekend where she dominated the San Juan Shootout, Florida State senior guard Leonor Rodriguez captured Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week honors, the league office announced on Monday.

Rodriguez’s honor marks the second consecutive week a Seminole has won the conference honor, joining junior forward Natasha Howard, who was tabbed for the award on Nov. 19.

The 5-11 guard from the Canary Islands, Spain, put on a show in two games in Puerto Rico, averaging 19.0 points and shooting 80 percent (12-of-15) from the field at the Mario Morales Coliseum.

She scored a career-best 22 points on a perfect 8-of-8 shooting in a 90-51 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Friday, before scoring a team-best 16 points in the upset win over No. 17/19 Vanderbilt, 73-59, on Saturday.

Rodriguez, whom head coach Sue Semrau has called the Garnet and Gold’s MVP so far this season, has reached double figures in scoring in every game as FSU has jumped out to a 5-0 start while beating opponents by over 30 points per game.

She made 5-fo-8 three-point shots in San Juan and leads the ACC in three-point percentage this season (.611).

Rodriguez and the Noles return to action on Wednesday when they host Iowa at 7 p.m. at the Donald L. Tucker Center in an ACC/Big Ten Challenge matchup.

Former Star Monroe Captures Spanish League Weekend MVP Honors

In Rodriguez’s home country, Jacinta Monroe also captured accolades, nabbing Spanish League weekend MVP honors after scoring 21 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and making three steals in Spar Uni Girona’s 81-52 win over Cadi-ICG Software.

Monroe played for the Seminoles from 2006-10 and was a two-time All-ACC selection and All-Defensive Team honoree. Coincidentally, Monroe was the last Seminole to earn the ACC Player of the Week award before Howard grabbed it last week, taking the honor for FSU on Feb. 22, 2010.
