TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Freshman Cristina Roque was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week for her performance during the last weekend of the regular season. Likewise, junior Jaelin Howell was named TopDrawerSoccer Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Roque helped lead the Seminole defense to two shutouts over top-5 teams, as FSU defeated No. 5 Duke 1-0 and No. 3 Clemson 2-0. Florida State only allowed seven shots in two games. Only three of those seven shots were on goal and they all came in Thursday’s game against Duke. Roque came up with a save on all three of those shots for a new career-high for saves in a game.
Roque’s two shutouts were her fourth and fifth complete shutouts of the season. She also earned a combined shutout against Notre Dame in the season opener in a game in which she played just over 81 minutes.
Howell got back in Tallahassee Tuesday night after a stint with the U.S. Women’s National Team and came back like she was never gone. Howell scored her second goal of the season with 12 seconds left against No. 5 Duke to lead the Seminoles to a 1-0 win over the Blue Devils.
Howell’s defensive presence was also noticed in both of Florida State’s games as she helped lead the Seminoles from her holding midfield position. FSU recorded their fifth and sixth shutouts of the season against Duke and Clemson.
Florida State is off this weekend before they begin play in the ACC Tournament on Tuesday, November 10 at 12:30 pm against Notre Dame.
