TALLAHASSEE, Fla – The Seminole Diving Team, led by Head Coach Patrick Jeffrey
took five divers to this weekend’s NCAA Zone B Qualifying Championships in Athens,
Georgia. The five member roster that competed this weekend included for the women,
Freshman sensation Chelsie Lerew, and Junior’s Caren Hirai and Michelle Sekeres, while
the men featured Freshman Josh Edelman and Senior Louis Dondero. The top five
finishers in each competition would receive automatic bids to the NCAA Championships in
Long Island, NY on March 15-17.
The women were led by the ACC’s Most Valuable Diver award winner Chelsie
Lerew, who won both the one and three-meter competitions at this year’s ACC
championships. Caren Hirai and Michelle Sekeres also competed this weekend after their
outstanding performances at the ACC Championships back in mid-February. At the
championships, Hirai finished second in the one-meter dive and sixth in the three-meter
dive, while Sekeres finished third and 11th, respectively.
The men were led by ACC’s Most Valuable Diver award winner Josh Edelman,
who won both the one and three-meter dive competitions at this year’s ACC

The Diving Zone Championships were not as successful for the Seminoles as they
were hoping. The best finish for both teams came in the three-meter dive, where Chelsie
Lerew finished in sixth place with a total of 505.15 points. Lerew missed qualifying for
her first NCAA competition by a narrow margin of only 1.15 points behind Georgia’s

Championships. Josh Edelman finished 16th in the one-meter dive with a total of 274.90
points, while Louis Dondero came in 26th. In the three-meter dive, Edelman and Dondero
finished 19th and 26th, respectively.
The Diving Zone Championships brought a close to a successful season enjoyed by
the young Seminole diving squad this year. The Seminoles will return everyone for
next season except senior Louis Dondero, who will graduate in the spring. With the
likes of Lerew, Hirai, Sekeres, and Edelman, Coach Jeffrey and the Seminoles will look to
build on the success of this year and prepare for the 2001-2002 diving season.
