Seminole Men’s Golf Team Finishes Sixth At Linger Longer Invitational

May 15, 2006

Florida State University freshman Matt Savage earned his first career top-10 individual finish and led the Seminole men’s golf team to a sixth place finish in the team standings at the inaugural Linger Longer Invitational at the Oconee Course at Reynolds Plantation. The Seminoles will next compete in the NCAA East Regional Championship beginning Thursday at the Lake Nona Golf and Country Club in Orlando, Fla.

Georgia , the nation’s No. 1 ranked team by Golfstat, won the team title with an 855 team total. The Bulldogs finished 14 strokes better than second-place Charlotte and 21 strokes better than Tennessee-Chattanooga. The Bulldogs’ top four players all earned top-10 individual finishes. Trevor Murphy of Charlotte earned individualist honors as he defeated Martin Ureta of North Carolina in a playoff. Murphy and Ureta finished tied with identical scores of 211.

Savage (Louisville, Ky.) led the Seminoles with a one-over par total of 217 for the 54-hole tournament. He carded scores of 71-74-72 and finished tied for 10th in the individual standings. Savage’s finish at the Linger Longer comes on the heels of his tied for 12th place finish at the ACC Championship in April. In his last two tournaments, Savage is a cumulative total of three under par and has averaged 71.5 strokes per round.

Seminole sophomore Jonas Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) finished tied for 19th after carding a two-under par 70 in the second round. He finished with a three-round total of 220 – the fourth consecutive event during which he has carded a score of 220 or better. Blixt earned his third consecutive top-20 individual finish and sixth of his sophomore season.

Freshman Nicholas Smith (Ocala, Fla.) earned his seventh top-25 individual finish of the year as he completed the tournament with a 222 total – good enough to earn a tied for 25th placing. He carded a three-under par 69 in the first round – one of only seven rounds carded below 70 during the entire event.

Junior Torstein Nevestad (Oslo, Norway) and sophomore Song Jeon (Seoul, Korea) finished tied for 51st and tied for 58th respectively in the individual standings.

The Seminoles begin play in their first NCAA Regional Championship since 1998 Thursday with the same lineup utilized by third-year Head Coach Trey Jones in the Linger Longer Invitational. It will mark the third consecutive tournament the Seminoles have sent the same starting line-up onto the course for an event.
