TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The Florida State men’s golf team is ranked 15th and three Seminoles – senior All-American Jonas Blixt, junior All-American Matt Savage and true freshman Drew Kittleson – are ranked among the nation’s top 50 individual golfers in the preseason GolfWeek / Nike poll. The Seminoles open their season at the fall season at the Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio, Sept. 9-10.
“The national ranking is a great thing for our program and is a combination of past performances and the influence of new players on our team,” said Head Coach Trey Jones. “If this team can improve as the year progresses then we can have a special year. Our guys have set some lofty goals and I am looking forward to helping them achieve those goals.”
The Seminoles finished the 2006-07 season ranked 15th in the final national rankings by GolfStat, in a tie for 13th place in the NCAA Championship finals, in fifth at the NCAA East Regional Championship and in a tie for fourth at the ACC Championship as it enjoyed their most successful season in more than a decade. The Seminoles had two players – Blixt and Savage – earn All-America, All-Southeast Regional and All-ACC honors as the team earned seven top-five team finishes and returned to the national elite under Jones.
“It’s great to see three of our players ranked in the top 50,” said Jones. “I have a feeling we could have another player not listed step up and also have a great year. Jonas and Matt have proven they can play at a high level while Drew’s play this summer speaks for itself.
Florida State completed its best season in 2007 under Jones by playing in back-to-back NCAA Regional Championships for the first time since the 1995 and 1996 seasons and advancing to the NCAA Championship finals for the first time since 1996. The Seminoles’ tied for fourth place team finish at the ACC Championship marked the highest finish in the event for Florida State since finishing in fourth place in 1996.
Florida State’s Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden), Savage (Louisville, Ky.) and Drew Kittleson (Tucson, Az.) were all named to the Golf World Top 50 Players to Watch List for the upcoming season. The Seminoles, Stanford, UCLA and USC are the only teams in the country with three players on the list. The Seminoles are the only ACC team to have three players on the top 50 list.
