Seminole Move Into Sixth Place At ACC Men’s Golf Championship

Sophomore Jonas Blixt led at trio of Seminoles with scores at or below par and to help Florida State jump into sixth place in the team standings after the first two rounds of the 54th Annual Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf Tournament at the Old North State Club. Blixt carded a two-under par 70, freshman Cameron Knight a one-under par 71 and senior Torstein Nevestad an even-par 72 as the Seminoles finished with a 286 team total for the round to help Florida State improve their standing by three places after beginning play in the second round in ninth place.

Blixt is now in the top 10 of the individual standings as he improved his standing by 13 places. He began play in a tie for 23rd and is in a tie for 10th place heading into Sunday’s final round of play. Knight moved from a tie for 48th into a tie for 36th while Nevestad moved from a tie for 26th into a tie for 24th place as four of the five players in the Seminoles’ line-up improved their standing on the second day of play in the event. Freshman Seath Lauer carded a two-over par score of 72 and held his place in the individual standings; he is in a tie for 42nd place.

Georgia Tech surged into first place in the team standings as the Yellow Jackets turned in the best team round of the afternoon – a five-under par total of 283. The Yellow Jackets lead second place Duke by two strokes entering the final round. Martin Ureta, a senior at North Carolina, took over the individual lead as he carded a two-under par 70 and has a two-day total of 139. Ureta is one stroke ahead of Georgia Tech’s Cameron Tringale – the defending individual ACC champion – who carded a four-under par 68 in the second round. Tringale’s 68 was the best score of the afternoon among the 55 competitors.

Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) played well throughout the round and was even on the front nine and two-under on the back nine. He increased his birdie total from two to four and decreased his bogie total from three to two as compared to Friday’s first round when he carded a one-over par 73. Blixt is in position to earn the best ACC Championship finish of his career after finishing in a tie for 18th in 2005 and in a tie for 20th in 2006.

Knight (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) carded a one-under par 71 in the second round and is in a tie for 36th place with a two-day total of 149. He improved his score by seven strokes after carding a seven-over par 78 in the first round. Knight carded four birdies and only three bogies in the second round after carding three birdies, four bogies, a double bogie and a triple bogie in the first round. He did not card a hole lower than a bogie in the second round.

Nevestad (Oslo, Norway) continue to score as the Seminoles’ surprise player in the event. He is in a tie for 24th place after finishing with an even-par 72 in the second round. Nevestad, who has competed in only two events prior to the ACC Championship this year (fall and spring seasons), the Seminoles’ second ranking player with a total of 146 and is two-over par for the for the first two rounds. Sophomore Matt Savage had his score counted in the team total as he finished with a one-over par 73 for a two-round total of 147. He is in a tie for 29th place in the individual standings.

“I was happy to see our entire team play better today than we did yesterday,” said Head Coach Trey Jones. “We got going early today but didn’t close things out as well as I would have liked. I really think that we can have a good round tomorrow and if we do that we can put some pressure on the lead group. It will be interesting to see how we can play if we get it going early. If we can play well tomorrow we can leave here with some good thoughts that will benefit us in the coming weeks.”

The Seminoles will play in the second of three waves on the final day of competition with Virginia Tech and North Carolina. The final round of play round begins at 8:30 p.m.
