Seminole Relay Adds to All-America Honors with Third Place Finish

June 11, 2004

Austin, TX – The Florida State men’s track and field squad added another All-America addition to the squad. The 400m relay team finished in third place in 39.14, behind Florida (39.12) and Arizona State (39.14) at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in Austin, TX.

“Of course, I’m so proud of them [the relay team],” said head coach Bob Braman. “You’re talking about a group that broke a 22-year old school record five times this season. The times were a little slower overall because everyone ran yesterday (as opposed to the scheduled days off). That opened the door for Florida to run a good race and win a title.”

Sophomore Derrick Baker (Miami, FL/Northwestern), junior Rhoan Sterling (Cambridge, Ontario/Toledo), senior Brian Dzingai (Harare, Zimbabwe/Truman State) and freshman Cedric Nabe (Geneva, Switzerland/Lycee St. Joseph) ran for the Seminoles – the same group that posted the fastest time in the nation in the prelims.

Sophomore Rafeeq Curry (Miami, FL/ACE Academy) earned a place in the triple jump finals, taking 10th place in 52’5.25″ (15.98). Junior Willie Johnson (Orlando, FL/Edgewater) finished the preliminary round in 11th place, jumping a season-best 52’3.25″ (15.93m). Both are looking for All-American honors for the second time in as many years. The Seminoles are the only school in the triple jump finals with multiple jumpers.

Senior Sean Campbell (Orlando, FL/Evans) ended his career at Florida State with a 46.62 in the 400m dash.

The Seminoles begin the final day of competition at 7:00 p.m., when freshman Tom Lancashire (Bolton, England/Turton) runs in the 1500m run. Dzingai competes in the 200m for the final time in his collegiate career at 8:25 p.m. followed by fellow senior Joep Tigchelaar (Macharen, Netherlands/Titus Branasma Lyceum) in the 5K at 9:15 p.m. The triple jump event finals begin at 7:15 p.m. and will feature Curry and Johnson.
