Seminole Volleyball Falls At Virginia

Final Stats

Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida State got off to a good start against Virginia on Thursday but were unable to hold on, falling 3-1 (30-28, 24-30, 27-30, 20-30) at Memorial Gymnasium in Charlottesville, Va. The Seminoles are now 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the ACC.

The first game of the night was also the closest ending in a 30-28 win for the Seminoles. The entire game was back and forth between both teams, going nearly point for point. With the score tied at 28 apiece, a ball handling error by Virginia moved the garnet and gold into the lead followed immediately by a kill from sophomore Brianna Barry (Winter Springs, Fla.), sealing the deal.

A highlight once again for Florida State was junior Mira Djuric (Belgrade, Serbia) who came away with an impressive 21 kills and 22.5 points, leading both teams in those categories.

The Seminoles had the opportunity to take home a win, but the Cavaliers’ strong blocking and steady play hindered their chances moving into game two.

“I think whenever you go on the road and take game one you put yourself at a huge advantage,” head coach Todd Kress said. “When you get opportunities like that you put yourself in a good position to have a positive outcome from the match.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to play steady volleyball after game one where Virginia was very steady. Virginia is also a really strong blocking team and they blocked very well tonight.”

The Cavaliers led in team blocks with 23 compared to FSU’s five and dominated in attacking percentage with .252 to the Seminoles’ .157.

“We made a few bad decisions on some of our attacks and our serving wasn’t at its best,” Kress added. “Simply put, we were too high error and Virginia played steady and that is why they came away with the win.”

Florida State isn’t finished with the state of Virginia as it travels to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech tomorrow night, Friday, Sept. 21. The Hokies, who lost to Miami Thursday night, are now 0-2 in the ACC. Tomorrow night’s match can be seen live on ACC Select by logging onto
