PINEHURST, N.C. –
The Florida State University women’s golf team is in a tie for second place after the first round of the 18th Annual Atlantic Coast Conference Championship at Pinehurst No. 8 at the Pinehurst Resort. The Seminoles are tied with N.C. State and are only eight strokes behind No. 1 ranked Duke. The Blue Devils are looking to win the event for the 11th consecutive season. Seminole freshman Caroline Westrup, who is playing in her first career conference championship, shot an even-par 72 and is tied for second place in the individual standings. Westrup is only three stokes off the individual lead of Amanda Blumenherst of team-leading Duke.
Duke was led by Blumenherst who carded a three-under par 69 and was the only golfer in the 44-player field to shot below par in the first round. She leads three Blue Devils in the top-10 of the individual standings: Blumenherst, Jennie Lee, who is tied for fourth with a two over par 74, and Jennifer Pandolfi who is tied for seventh with a three-over par 75.
Westrup (Ahus, Sweden), a leading candidate for ACC Freshman of the Year honors, shot her team-leading fourth round of par of better golf this spring with her even-par 72. She had two birdies and two bogies on the front nine and played errorless golf on the back nine to finish at even par. Westrup will play the final two rounds looking to either tie (second place) the best ACC finish by a Florida State golfer or earn the Seminoles’ first individual championship in 14 appearances at the ACC Championship.
Junior Jaclyn Burch (Wildwood, Mo.) is tied for seventh in the individual standings with a three-over par score of 75. She played 13 holes of even-par golf and birdied the 18th hole to finish at three-over. Burch is looking to finish in the top 10 at the ACC Championship for the second consecutive season after finishing tied for 10th and earning All-ACC honors in 2005.
Sophomore Whitney Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) continued to play well and is tied for 13th place in the individual standings after carding a four-over par 76. She has carded scores of 76 or better in five of the last seven rounds. Brummett is looking for her best ACC Championship finish after placing tied for 25th during the spring 2005 event. Senior Caroline Larsson (Danderyd, Sweden) is tied for 22nd and sophomore Whitney Wright (Rockingham, N.C.) is in 42nd place.
The second of three rounds is slated to begin Saturday at 8 a.m.
