Seminole Women’s Golf Team Misses Out On Trip To NCAA Championship Finals On Sudden-Death Loss To LSU

May 10, 2008

AUSTIN, Tex. –
The Florida State University women’s golf team was defeated by LSU in a one-hole playoff and did not advance to the NCAA Championship finals as play in the NCAA Central Regional Championship at the University of Texas Golf Course came to a close. The Seminoles and the Tigers finished tied for eighth in the team standings and were forced to wait nearly four hours until the round was completed before beginning the sudden-victory playoff which was won by the Tigers. With all five players teeing off of hole No. 1, the Tigers earned one birdie and four pars while the Seminoles earned five pars. The winning shot – a chip in birdie – was holed by LSU’s Alexis Rather.

Florida State moved into a tie for eighth place with its best single-round team total of the event – a 297. The Seminoles were led by Caroline Westrup (even par 72) and seniors Whitney Wright (one-over par 73) and Whitney Brummett (four-over par 76). The Seminoles began the third round three stroke above the cut and closed the after tied with LSU.

“We didn’t beat ourselves and it took a great golf shot to beat us,” said Seminole Head Coach Debbie Dillman. “It’s upsetting for me and our team that our two seniors – Whitney (Brummett) and Whitney (Wright) – had to end their careers on a playoff. But my hat is off to all of our players; they all did what they had to do to get us in the position to play in a playoff. We played a nice round of golf today, made a lot of the shots we had to make and then performed extremely well under pressure in the playoff. We put our shots where we wanted to and played the playoff hole well. They (LSU) just played one shot better. Congratulations to their players and coaching staff and our team hopes they do well at nationals.”

Westrup will make her third consecutive NCAA Championships appearance and her second consecutive as an individual. She finished in a tie for fifth place in the individual standings and tied with Lauren Doughtie of NC State as the two highest finishing individuals not on a qualifying team and both advanced to the national championship finals as individuals. Westrup finished in a tie for 11th place at the 2007 NCAA finals and in a tie for 29th in the 2006 NCAA finals.

“I’m very sad that I am not going to nationals with all of my teammates,” said Westrup. “It was one of my dreams to go with all of my friends to the finals. It was the last time I could have gone with two seniors (Brummett and Wright) and that would have been very special for all of us. I am going to the nationals intent on winning a national championship for all of us and for Florida State University.”

Westrup (Ahus, Sweden) led the Seminoles over the final day of the regional with an even par score of 72 and a three-day total of 215. Her score is the third best regional total of her career and her score of 72 marked the eighth time in nine regional rounds that she had finished with a score of even par or better.

Westrup was consistently strong as she has been throughout her career with 17 holes at par or better (one birdie) and only one bogey during the third round. She was never above even and was below par for 11 of the 18 rounds she played. Westrup led the Seminoles with nine birdies during the three round regional championship. She begins play in the NCAA Championship at the University of New Mexico May 20-24.

Brummett, a senior who played in her final match as a Seminole, carded a four-over par 76 in the final round. She finished in a tie for 35th place with a three-round total of 226. Her regional finish marked tied her career high for a regional finish and marked the second time she had finished a regional championship in a tie for 35th place. Brummett also finished in a tie for 35th place at the 2006 NCAA East Regional Championship.

Brummett’s round of 76 included two birdies and 10 holes of par or better. She birdied her final hole of the day to pull the Seminoles into their eighth place tie in the team standings. Her total of 226 marked the third consecutive tournament that she have finished with a three-round total of 226 or better

Senior Whitney Wright (Rockingham, N.C.) also closed out her career with one of her better rounds of her final season. She carded a one over par 73 in the final round of the championship and finished in a tie fir 47th place with a 229 total. Her 47th place finish was 24 spots better than her tied for 71st place finish at the 2007 NCAA East Regional Championship.

Wright’s score of 73 in the final round of the event is tied for her third best round of the fall 2007 and spring 2008 seasons while her 229 total was her sixth best in 10 events this year. She improved her score each day of the regional – by four strokes on the second day and by three more strokes on the third day.

Junior Lauren Cousart (Athens, Ga.) carded a personal tournament best 76 in the third round. She finished in a tie for 81st place to mark a 12 spot improvement from her first career regional appearance in 2007. Cousart, who is one of three players who will return to the Seminoles’ line-up as a senior in 2009, played in six events this year and returns as one of the Seminoles’ most experienced players next season.

Freshman Macarena Silva (Santiago, Chile) also finished in a tie for 81st place in the individual standings. She carded back-to back scores of 78 in the first and second rounds of the NCAA Central Regional. Silva, too, will return as one of the Seminoles’ top players during the 2008-09 fall and spring seasons.

No. 2 ranked UCLA won the team championship with a 10 stroke advantage over No. 6 Purdue. Joining UCLA and Purdue from the Central Regional at the NCAA finals are Denver, TCU, Texas A&M, Alabama, Texas and LSU. Maria Hernandez of Purdue and Maria Jose Uribe of UCLA shared medalist honors with eight-under par scores of 208. Only six of the 108 golfers finished the 54-hole event under par.
