TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
Florida State, which has played in the NCAA Championship in 14 of the last 17 last seasons, opens its fall 2007 season at the Cougar Classic which will be played Sept. 9-11 at the Yeamans Hall Golf Club in Hanahan, S.C. The Seminoles enter the event as the defending team champion after finishing one stroke ahead of North Carolina last season. The Seminoles are led by two-time All-American Caroline Westrup and the senior duo of Whitney Brummett and Whitney Wright – three players who have helped the Seminoles advance to both of the last two NCAA Championship tournaments.
THE COUGAR CLASSIC FIELD
No. 26 Florida State is joined by Alabama, the College of Charleston, Furman, Louisiana State, Maryland, Miami, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, No. 17 North Carolina, NC State, Notre Dame, Penn State, Richmond, South Carolina, South Florida, No. 12 Tennessee, Texas, No. 20 Texas A&M and UNC Greensboro in the 2007 Cougar Classic. The event will be played on the par 72, 6,159 yard course at the Yeamans Hall Golf Club in Hanahan, S.C.
FLORIDA STATE IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Florida State is ranked 26th in the pre-season poll by the editors of GolfWeek Magazine and 31st in the pre-season national rankings in the GolfWorld/NGCA Coaches’ poll. The Seminoles are one of five ACC teams ranked in the nation’s top 30 with three-time defending national champion Duke holding the top spot in both polls to begin the 2007-08 season.
TRIO OF WOMEN’S GOLFERS NAMED TO NGCA SCHOLAR ATHLETE TEAM
Florida State golfers Whitney Brummett, Jaclyn Burch and Caroline Westrup, who helped lead the Seminoles to its second consecutive appearance in the NCAA East Regional Championship in 2007, were named to the National Golf Coaches’ Association Scholar Athlete Team at the conclusion of the last season. It marked the third consecutive year Brummett has been named to the team, the second consecutive year for Burch and the first time Westrup has earned the academic honor.
WESTRUP LEADS SWEDEN AT EUROPEAN TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
Junior All-American Caroline Westrup led Sweden to a second-place finish at the European Ladies Team Championship at the Castelconturbia Golf Club in Italy in July. The Swedish team, the No. 2 seed team in the tournament, fell in the finals of the event to Spain, the No. 1 seeded team in the event. In match play, Westrup led Sweden past Finland, 6-1, in the first round and England, 4-3, in the second round. Spain won the team championship with a 5.5-1.5 victory over Sweden in the championship match.
FLORIDA STATE AT THE 2007 COUGAR CLASSIC
The Florida State women’s golf team opened the 2006-07 campaign in stellar fashion as it claimed the team championship of the Cougar Fall Classic hosted by the College of Charleston at Yeamans Hall Golf Club. Leading the way for the Seminoles were Caroline Westrup, who finished in second in the individual standings, and Whitney Brummett, who finished third in the individual standings. Florida State made up eight strokes on North Carolina and rallied from a tied for fifth team position after the first two rounds.
