The struggles at the plate continued for the 15th-ranked Seminole softball team as Georgia’s Lacey Gardner pitched a seven-inning masterpiece in limiting FSU to just two-hits in a 3-2 Georgia win. Gardner, a junior from Watkinsville, GA, improved to 6-0 on the season and dropped the Seminoles to 5-4 in 2002. The right-hander’s only mistake was a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the seventh but it wasn’t enough for FSU to pull out the win.

Both pitchers started strong with FSU’s Leslie Malerich (2-3) throwing a no-hitter with just one walk through two and two-thirds innings before giving up a two-out double to Nicole Barber. Malerich pitched her way out of the third by inducing a ground ball out to end the inning.

The Bulldogs broke on top in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out double by Shannon McKeon that plated Kristen Bell from first. The run came just moments after Seminole catcher Kimmy Carter picked off Georgia’s lead runner at second for the second out of the frame.

The Bulldogs added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Kim Wendland singled to left to lead off and she was followed by Bell who homered to the deepest part of the park extending the Georgia lead to 3-0. After a McKeon doubled to left, freshman Casey Hunter replaced Malerich on the mound. The Seminoles got out of the inning with no further damage on a double play which ended with Brandi Stuart gunning down McKeon at home.

Monique Marier made things interesting in the top of the seventh when she homered over the left field wall bringing home Jessica van der Linden who led off the inning with a double. Pinch hitter Julie Jordan was unable to extend the rally as Georgia continued the best start in program history at 11-0.

Florida State continues play in the Seminole Challenge Tournament this evening when they face the Syracuse Orangewomen (1-0) in the final game of Friday’s slate. The Seminoles return to action Saturday, February 16 at 2:00 p.m. when they take on Penn State (1-1) and follow that up with a 4:00 p.m. tilt with ACC-rival Maryland (1-1).
