DESTIN, Fla. –
Florida State won the team title and Seminole sophomore Caroline Westrup won the individual title as competition in the Chrysler Challenge finished up on the Baytowne Course at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort Monday. The Seminoles led the event wire-to-wire and defeated second-place North Carolina by 24 strokes to gain their first team championship of the spring 2007 season. Westrup carded a three-under par 68 in the final round and defeated Dori Carter of Ole Miss by seven strokes to capture the third individual championship of her Florida State career.

Florida State carded a 294 team score in the third round to claim the championship with an 895 team score. The Seminoles’ team score in the final round was the best team round of the tournament. Florida State topped North Carolina (who finished in second place with a 919 total) and the College of Charleston (who finished with a 937 team score) who finished in third place.

The team win for the Seminoles’ marked its first team title in the seven-year history of the event. The Seminoles finished fourth in the event during the 2002 fall season. Florida State has now won two team titles this year – the Cougar Fall Classic (fall of 2006) and the Chrysler Challenge (spring of 2007). South Carolina, who did not participate in this year’s event, won the team championship during the fall of 2006.

Westrup, the top amateur golfer in the world, carded a sub-par round for the second time in six rounds this spring as he finished with a three-under par 68 in the final round and a 215 total for the three-round event. Westrup finished in second place at the Cougar Fall Classic (fall 2006) and tied for first place at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational (fall 2006) earlier this season and has earned seven top-10 finishes in 10 career events.

Westrup won the team championship with a seven-stroke victory over Dori Carter of Ole Miss. Carter carded a two-over par 73 in the third and final round and finished with a 222 total for the three-round event. Carter finished one stroke ahead of North Carolina’s Katie Miller who finished with a 73 and a 226 total. Florida State’s Whitney Wright finished tied for fourth with Steffi Kirchmayr of the College of Charleston to earn the best finish of her career.
