Seminoles Close Out Illini Open

Jan. 15, 2011

SARASOTA, Fla. – The No. 27 Florida State men’s tennis team finished the Illini Open strong with the doubles team of senior Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) and sophomore Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) finishing the weekend undefeated in doubles. The `Noles competed with No. 15 Texas Tech and No. 16 Illinois at the Sarasota Bath and Racquet club.

“I was really pleased with our guys,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We went undefeated in number one doubles. Vahid and Connor were dominate over Texas Tech today with a 8-2 win. I thought that was great.”

After missing playing time in the fall, Mirzadeh and Smith quickly got back into the swing of things to start the season with a 3-0 record. Today the `Noles defeated Raony Carvalho and Rafael Garcia of Texas Tech 8-2. Smith finished the tournament with a 5-1 record in doubles and singles.

Also in doubles play, sophomores Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) and Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) recorded their second victory of the season in a close 9-8(5) match against David Gonzalez and Raphael Pfister of Texas Tech.

“We had a pretty good showing from a bunch of our starters,” continued Hultquist. “I think this tournament helped us prepare for our match on Tuesday and this coming up weekend. We got a lot of support from the Seminole Boosters of Sarasota and Bradenton but look forward to returning home.”

In singles play, No. 42 Mirzadeh nabbed his first singles win of the season with a quick 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 121 Abe Souza of Illinois. Freshman Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) defeated Texas Tech’s Pfister soundly 6-1, 6-1. Reed grabbed his second singles win of the season in a 6-4, 6-4 match over Gonzalez of Texas Tech. He finished 4-2 this weekend along with Bucaro and Mirzadeh.

The Seminoles open up home play Tuesday, January 18 at 2:00 p.m. at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. Admission is free at all home matches.
