Seminoles Dominate Michigan State In Women’s Tennis, 6-1

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team clenched their second consecutive victory this afternoon with a win over Michigan State, 6-1. All matches were decided in straight sets in the win. Michigan State, which is in Tallahassee for a four-match road stint, falls to 7-5 on the season.

The Seminoles swept the doubles matches to take the first point of the contest. Senior Jessica Balbuena and freshman Lauren Walker defeated Mandy Caldemeyer and Keri Thompson at the no. 1 doubles position, 8-1. To clench the doubles point, senior Alida Gallovits and Christina Denny overcame Caroline Lay and Trine Lise Juliussen at no. 2 doubles, 8-3. Soon after, Anca Dumitrescu and Beth Lawrence, who were up 7-3, overcame a late three game rally by Spartans Dora Vastag and Asa Liden, to take the match, 8-6.

In singles play, five Seminoles defeated their opponents in straight sets. Finishing first was Christina Denny, who easily defeated Caldemeyer 6-1, 6-0 at the no. 3 spot. Anca Dumitrescu and Alida Gallovits also won convincingly at the no. 1 and no. 2 singles postitions, respectively. Meredith Fish and Lauren Walker nabbed wins in the contest as well.

“I felt really good about today’s match,” head coach Lise Gregory said after the victory. “I thought the girls really used their strengths, which led us to a win. We had a couple close matches, and I was pleased with the effort the team showed today.

The Seminoles next face Florida International University on Sunday, February 10th at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of Florida State University. The match will begin at 11 a.m. Admission is free to the public.
