Seminoles Eliminate Gators With 17-11 Victory In Tallahassee Regional

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A big inning proved to be big for Florida State as the Seminoles eliminated the Florida Gators from regional play Saturday afternoon with a 17-11 victory off of 25 hits in Game Three of the 2008 Tallahassee Baseball Regional at Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium. FSU scored seven runs in the fifth inning and did not trail again. With the win, FSU (49-11) advanced to Sunday’s 1 p.m. game (1:07 Sun Sports TV) vs. the loser of Saturday night’s game between Bucknell and Tulane. The Gators conclude their season with a 34-24 record.

The Gators scored early and often and had a 5-1 lead after three innings but the Seminoles responded with another run in the fourth to cut the UF lead to three. Florida failed to score for the first time in the game in the bottom of the fourth as FSU reliever Elih Villanueva entered the game and retired the side in order, giving the Seminoles momentum.

The seven-run fifth inning brought the Seminoles from four down to four runs ahead (9-5). FSU loaded the bases on two singles and a walk to open the inning and then the scoring began. Six runs scored before the first out was made. Jack Rye, Tony Delmonico and Stuart Tapley all drove in runs with singles while Dennis Guinn walked in a run and designated hitter Tommy Oravetz, who drove in a run in the fourth inning, drove in two more runs with a double down the right field line. Tyler Holt’s second base hit of the inning drove in the final run of the inning.

Florida tied the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the fifth with four runs off of three hits, including a three-run homer by Clayton Pisani but FSU’s Tapley singled to right in the top of the sixth inning to score Guinn who had singled to left to open the inning and just like that, the Seminoles led again, 10-9.

FSU opened things up with a five-hit, five-run seventh inning that was highlighted by a three-run blast by Delmonico, who finished the game scoring three runs and driving in four others.

The Gators continued to fight and with three straight hits in the bottom of the seventh inning, including a double by centerfielder Matt den Dekker, Florida scored two runs on a base hit down the left field line by first baseman Jon Townsend to pull within four at 15-11.

Buster Posey’s two run homer in the top of the eighth sealed the victory for the Seminoles.

Villanueva (7-2) earned the victory for FSU while Tony Davis (0-2) got the loss for the Gators.


  • Florida State’s three victories over Florida this season are the most in a season since winning four games over the Gators in 2000.
  • Florida State’s 25 hits is its most in a game this season and the fifth time this season that the Seminoles have recorded 20 or more hits in a game.
  • The teams’ combined 28 runs are the most in the series between FSU and UF since March 6, 1983. (UF 16, FSU 14 in Gainesville).
  • Buster Posey hit his 20th home run of the season marking the first time a Seminole has hit 20 home runs in a season since 1999 when Marshall McDougall (28) and Matt Diaz (21) did so.
  • FSU scored seven or more runs in a single inning for the 12th time this season.
