ATLANTA, Ga. – The 21st ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (10-3, 1-1) falls on the road to Georgia Tech (6-5, 1-1) 4-3 for their first loss in ACC play.
The Noles started off the match losing their fourth doubles point of the season. Sophomore Chase Wood and freshman Richard Thongoana grabbed their fourth doubles win together this spring to start off doubles. Georgia Tech punched back with a 6-4 win on court one to tie things up. With the doubles point on the line the match on court two was in a tiebreaker. Georgia Tech took the point with a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker.
Georgia Tech struck first in singles winning on court three. The Yellow Jacket’s Andrew Li defeated freshman Juan Martin Jalif 6-3, 6-1.
Wood struck first for the Noles on court six. He earned his third straight win and fourth of the spring with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Joseph Gandolpho. Junior Alex Knaff tied the match up at two with a straight set win of his own on court two. After taking the first set 6-3 he fell behind 4-1 in the second set. He stayed strong and fought back to tie the set up at five. With the match tied at six, Knaff took the tiebreaker to tie the match.
The Yellow Jackets struck back taking court five and a 3-2 lead. Thongoana was not phased as he evened things up at three. After losing the first set 6-3 he went on a tear taking the second set 6-4 and the third 6-2.
The match came down to court one as redshirt senior Lucas Poullain faced off against 36th ranked Carlos Divar. Poullain took the first set 7-5 before Divar bounced back to take the second 6-4. The beginning of the third set was back and forth until Divar pulled away and took the set 6-2 to clinch the match.
The Noles have a shot to bounce back this Sunday as they take on Oklahoma in Norman at 2 p.m. ET.
