GREENSBORO, N.C. (seminoles.com) –
Florida State freshman Olivia Hullert finished in a tie for 12th place in the individual standings and the Seminoles women’s golf team finished in fourth place in the team standings as play in the 25th Annual ACC Women’s Golf Championships at Sedgefield Country Club came to a close Sunday. It marked the fifth time in the last seven seasons the Seminoles have finished in the top four of the team standings in the toughest conference in women’s collegiate golf.
In finishing in fourth place in the ACC Championships, Florida State outpaced two teams ahead of it in the national rankings: No. 9 North Carolina and No. 39 Wake Forest as the Seminoles certainly improved their national standing and postseason resume.
Florida State will now await word on its efforts to play in the NCAA Championship Tournament for the school record eighth consecutive season. The announcement of the participants in the three regional sites (Auburn University, the University of Oklahoma and Stanford University) will come on April 29 with competition the three-round tournaments running May 9-11.
Duke earned its second consecutive and 18th overall ACC Championship as it earned a 24 stroke win over NC State. Virginia finished third and the Seminoles fourth. Brittany Altomare of Virginia won the individual championship by two strokes over Duke’s Letitia Beck despite carding a five over par score of 76 in the third round – a total that included five bogeys on her final nine holes.
“We are absolutely pleased with our finish,” said head coach Amy Bond. “Our girls all fought hard in the toughest weather conditions of the weekend and we beat some really tough teams. It was huge for us to beat the teams that we did in this event. We made some critical shots; we received late birdies from both Olivia and Laure that were crucial to our success today and Jessica played her best golf of the tournament.
Hullert (Baerum, Norway) finished as the Seminoles leader for the fourth time in her career as she finished with a three round score of 228. She carded a 6 over par score of 77 in the third round. Hullert improved her individual standing in the third round despite her score of 77 on Sunday. She carded scores of 76 and 75 in the first two rounds of the event and was in a tie for 14th place after two rounds.
Hullert finished the tournament well as she was 1 under par over her last four holes. She carded two birdies (to total three during the round) and one par coming down the stretch.
Senior Jessica Negron (Ocala, Fla.) and sophomore Laure Castelain (Bordeaux, France) finished in a tie for 19th place in the individual standings with identical scores of 231. It marked the third consecutive top 20 ACC finish for Negron while Castelain earned her first top 20 ACC finish after finishing in a tie for 29th in 2012.
Negron finished the tournament well for a 4 over par score of 75 – an improvement from her first two round scores of 80 and 76. She carded 13 holes at par or better with one birdie after carding only 11 holes at par or better in round two and only seven holes at par or better in round one.
Florida State had three golfers finish in the top 20 of the individual standings – Hullert (tied for 12th), Negron (tied for 19th) and Castelain (tied for 19th) – making the Seminoles one of only four teams in the nine team field to finish with at least three players in the top 20 of the individual standings.
“We are extremely proud of the girls this weekend” said Bond. “As we continue to improve our program, we will continue to move up in this tournament and compete for the title. We feel that this finish improves our standing nationally to earn a bid to regionals.”
Florida State has competed in the NCAA Championships in each year since 2006 with a 10th place finish in the final national standings coming in 2010.
