March 24, 2013

The Florida State University golf team, led by three top 20 individual placings, finished in ninth place in the team standings as play in the LSU Tiger Classic at the University Club came to a close on Sunday. The Seminoles were led in the individual standings by senior Jessica Negron, sophomore Laure Castelain and freshman Olivia Hullert who all finished with scores of 228 and who all finished in a tie for 16th place in the individual standings.

No. 8 Arkansas won its first tournament championship of the year with a 10 stroke victory over No. 25 Tulane. The Razorbacks led the event wire to wire to claim the championship. Emily Tubert of Arkansas carded an even par 72 in the final round and finished with a 221 total. She earned a five stroke win over Maribel Lopes Porras of Tulane and Madelene Sagstrom of LSU. Tubert moved into a tie for first place during the second round and was the only player to card an even par or better score in the third and final round.

Castelain (Bordeaux, France) and Hullert (Baerum, Norway) played the best rounds of golf in the final round for the Seminoles as they both carded 4 over par scores of 76 in the final round. The scores by Castelain and Hullert allowed them move into the top 20 of the final individual standings.

Castelain was at her best late in the third round as she closed out the tournament with six consecutive holes scored at par. She carded two birdies during the round to bring her tournament total to a team-high seven with four coming in the first round.

Hullert also played well to conclude to round as she was 1 over par during the course of her final 10 holes of the round. She carded one birdie in the third round and totaled three birdies and an eagle during the tournament.

Senior Jessica Negron (Ocala, Fla.) was the third Seminole who finished in a tie for 16th place to mark her fourth consecutive top 20 individual finish.

“The conditions were really tough today and we have to learn how to handle tough conditions moving forward,” said Head Coach Amy Bond. “This was one of those golf courses that makes you pay for your mistakes. We are going to learn from this and continue to get better.”

The Seminoles will travel to play at the Bryan National Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C., March 29-31 marking the third consecutive weekend the Seminoles will see action.
