PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (seminoles.com) –
Florida State’s Carlton Kuhlo birdied her final two holes of the third round to vault the Seminole women’s golf team to a fourth place finish in the team standings as play in the Marsh Landing Invitational at the Marsh Landing Golf Course came to a close on Tuesday. Kuhlo’s back to back birdies allowed Florida State to move past both Florida International and UCF to earn their third top four team finish of the spring. The Seminoles defeated the Panthers by two strokes and the Knights by one stroke in the final team standings.
No. 14 Purdue won the team championship with a four stroke victory over Iowa State. The win was the Boilermakers second in as many tournaments and their third of the year. They won the Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate in March and the Mary Fossum Invitational in September. Paula Reto of Purdue defeated Gabriella Dominguez of Texas Tech in a playoff to win the individual medalist honors.
“I am very proud of the way all of the girls finished today,” said Head Coach Amy Bond. “Each of the five girls showed me a lot in the way they closed out this tournament. Carlton really battled and finished as well as she ever has after not hitting the ball well early in the round. She stayed positive and really got the job done in the end.”
Kuhlo (Tallahassee, Fla.) played the best event of her career as she tied her career best score for a single round with a 73 in the final round and established a new career best score for a three round tournament (224). She was as consistent as she has been during her career at Florida State with two birdies and 15 holes scored at par or better.
Kuhlo birdied her final two holes of the afternoon (holes No. 5 and 6) to help the Seminoles improve their team standing. In gaining two strokes on the final two holes, Kuhlo helped the Seminoles improved from a tie for fifth place in the team standings and move into fourth place in the final team standings.
The Seminoles were led in the individual standings for the fifth consecutive match by senior Jessica Negron (Ocala, Fla.) who finished in a tie for 11th place in the individual standings with a three round score of 219. She carded a 2 over par score of 74 in the final round.
Olivia Hullert (Baerum, Norway) played her best round of golf in the three round event with a 1 over par score of 73 after finishing with scores of 76 and 78 on Monday. She closed extremely well as she was 1 under par with four birdies over the course of her last 15 holes. After beginning the round at 3 over par on her first three holes, Hullert birdied three of her next four to move back to even and was never more than one stroke over par during the remainder of the round. She carded 13 of her final holes of the afternoon at par or better including her four birdies.
Hullert totaled nearly as many birdies in the third and final round (four) as she did on Monday (five) as the teams played 36 holes. With her score of 73 in the final round, Hullert improved her individual standing by 17 positions as she began the day in a tie for 66th place and finished in a tie for 49th place.
Senior Mary Beth Ramsay (Orlando, Fla.) played the best tournament of her career as she finished with a career best 225 score for the tournament after posting a career best tying single round score of 73 in the first round. Her score of 225 was two strokes better than her previous best tournament score of 227 which came at the Cougar Classic during the fall of 2009 – her first semester as a Seminole.
Ramsay finished the event at even par over her final 13 holes with three birdies and 10 holes scored at par or better. She totaled more birdies in the third round (four) than she did in the first two rounds of the tournament (three).
“I am really happy where we are as a team right now and am confident that we can use this experience as a positive that will vault us into a good frame of mind for the upcoming ACC Championships,” said Bond.
Florida State will next compete in the ACC Championships April 19-21 at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
