LAKE BUENO VISTA, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis team started the first day of the USTA Clay Court Invitational at Disney by going undefeated in doubles play at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The Seminoles return to the courts on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with double play.
Sophomores Benjamin Lock and Dominic Cotrone started Friday off with a 9-7 win over Baughman and Goldhoff of the USTA 9-7 in the Gold Doubles Draw round of 16. In the same draw, seniors Anderson Reed and Jordan Kelly-Houston defeated Ignat and Rubin of Columbia 9-7. Reed and Kelly-Houston play Quiroz and Hanfmann of USC at 8:00 a.m. while Lock and Cotrone play Federhofer and Watson of Florida.
In the Garnet Doubles Draw, senior Andres Bucaro and freshman Michael Rinaldi won a decisive 8-1 match over Gladstone and Blasco of UCF 8-1 while redshirt freshman João Gauer and sophomore Cristian Gonzalez Mendez won 8-6 over Wang of USC and Orces of The Citadel. Bucaro and Rinaldi play at 8:00 a.m. against Proisy and Johnson of UF while Gauer and Gonzalez Mendez take on Levine and McCall of Duke.
“We were fortunate to win several close doubles matches today,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “I was pleased how we came up with big shots at the opportune time and we beat a couple of really good teams. I thought the Columbia win was especially good for Jordan and Anderson given the fact they were down a break and had to come back and close it out.”
Playing only one round of singles was the Garnet and Spear Draw. Gauer won 6-3, 6-3 over Sharma of Georgia Tech in the round of 16 of the Spear Draw while Gonzalez Mendez defeated Neuner of FAU 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the Garnet draw. Gauer plays Trkulja of Penn State at 11:45 a.m. while Gonzalez Mendez plays Penn State’s Bader.
The Gold draw played two rounds on Friday beginning with the round of 32. Kelly-Houston came off the courts first with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Juan Melian of Georgia Tech. Lock defeated Wang of USC 6-3, 6-4 and Cotrone topped Espejo Sanchez of Tulsa 7-6 (5), 6-4. None of the players advanced out of the round of 16. Those consolation matches begin at 12:30 p.m.
“I was really pleased with Cristian’s win today,” continued Hultquist. “He’s been injured and he won a very long match. I thought he really stepped it up at the end. Dominic won a match over a guy who I think is going to be top 50 in the nation. He won a really tight first set tiebreaker.”
Competing in the tournament along with Florida State this weekend is USC, Duke, Cal, Florida, Kentucky, Georgia Tech, UCF, Penn State, Columbia, Tulsa, FAU and The Citadel.
