Seminoles Hold Final Orange Bowl Practice

Jan. 1, 2006

The No. 22 Florida State Seminoles held their final practice for the Orange Bowl Sunday at Nova Southeastern University. The team worked out in shorts for 15 periods and put the final touches on the game plan for their January 3rd meeting with No. 3 Penn State. Lorenzo Booker returned to practice after missing the last two days with flu-like symptoms. The seniors visited patients at Joe Dimaggio Hospital Sunday after practice. On Monday, several players and coaches will attend the Orange Bowl luncheon and then the team will hold a walk-thru at Dolphins Stadium at 4:00 p.m. The game will be televised by ABC at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday with Mike Tirico, Kirk Herbstreit and Erin Andrews calling the action.

Center David Castillo

(on Florida State’s preparation)

“We had some really good practices before we got here and since we got here we have been practicing well. They have been high intensity practices to get ready for Penn State.”

(on Penn State’s defense)

“They have good technique and overall they are a solid unit. They don’t miss too many tackles and they never get out of position. They have a couple of All-Americans and the rest of the players are very solid across the board. We have to go out and execute and make sure we don’t turn the ball over.”

(on how Penn State’s defense)

“When we look at them they look a lot like Miami. They look kind of bland but at the same time they aren’t. They shift a lot of players around and all of that is to confuse people. Everyone has to be on the same page and call out the right guy to block. Since we have a young quarterback many defenses try to confuse us so we have gotten a lot of practice on it.”

(on Coach Bowden versus Coach Paterno)

“You can’t put how long they have coached in perspective. People make fun of me saying that I was here for Coach Bowden’s first year because I’m a six year senior. No matter how much the game has changed they have always been able to adjust to it. They are timeless.”
Linebacker Sam McGrew

(on starting his final game in the Orange Bowl in the place of A.J. Nicholson)

“I am not happy on the way (the start) came about but in the same instance, as a team, we have to come out and play hard. We have to stay focused if we want to win this game. That is what we are going to do.”

(on his four years at FSU)

“I look back on my four years and I have learned a lot. I have been through a lot of games and a lot of snaps, it has been a great experience for me. I have had fun at Florida State University.”

Linebacker Ernie Sims

(on Penn State quarterback Michael Robinson)

“The main thing we have to do is contain him. We have to try and limit him from making plays.”

(on FSU’s run defense)

“If they think they are going to run the football down our throat we are going to be prepared for that.”

Defensive Lineman Brodrick Bunkley

(on preparations for Penn State)

“The guys are out here and have been practicing very hard. It is going to be a tough game. The team has had a great attitude throughout the practices. We just want to do the best we can when we get out there.”

(on containing Michael Robinson)

“He is a mobile quarterback. That is one thing we really stressed this week. He is an accurate passer, especially on the run. The thing is he can take off out of the pocket and lower his shoulder a little bit. You have to get ready for everything with a quarterback like him.”
