Seminoles Hold First Full Scrimmage at Doak Campbell Stadium

Aug. 10, 2002

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. – The Florida State Seminoles, ranked No. 3 in the preseason AP poll, participated in the first full scrimmage of the fall Saturday evening at Doak Campbell Stadium. Senior wide receiver Talman Gardner hauled in six passes for 101 yards to pace the offense while senior defensive end Alonzo Jackson led the defense with seven tackles and four sacks. The defense allowed just one touchdown and a field goal. Earlier in the morning, the Tribe took part in special teams drills as well as conditioning while in shells.

“The defense held ’em pretty good,” said head coach Bobby Bowden. “We’re still ragged. The first offense took the opening drive down and scored so that was encouraging. Chris Rix looked good, but he had his moments where he threw it to the wrong guy and had some errant throws.”

The scrimmage began with the first team offense facing off against the second team defense. Chris Rix led the ones down the field for the scrimmage’s only touchdown by going 4-of-6 in the drive for 38 yards. Rix broke through the defensive line with a one-yard quarterback sneak to score. Highlighting the drive was a 28-yard run by redshirt freshman tailback Willie Reid.

“We didn’t even play Greg Jones and only got Nick (Maddox) in there for a few plays. We were trying to evaluate the other backs. Willie Reid did a good job.”

The only other score came when Xavier Beitia connected on a 31-yard field goal.

Reid led all rushers with 34 yards on seven carries. Gardner was followed in the receiving column by Anquan Boldin, who caught three passes for 38 yards. Rix completed 8-of-13 passes for 101 yards and had one interception. Adrian McPherson was 4-of-6 for 73 yards with the No. 2 offense.

Sophomore defensive end Eric Moore complimented Alonzo Jackson with four tackles and two sacks of his own. Safety Yohance Buchanan recorded three tackles and intercepted a pass.

The team and coaching staff got a scare halfway through the scrimmage when Boldin went down with an injury. Boldin, who missed last season with a torn ACL, had the same left leg rolled when he attempted to pursue Buchanan after the interception. Boldin was diagnosed with a grade one left knee MCL sprain and will be evaluated further by the training staff.

Two-a-days continue Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. The second practice is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. The season opener is August 24 against Iowa State in Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium.

Injury Report: WR Anquan Boldin (Grade 1 left MCL sprain); NG Jeff Womble (Grade 2 left knee MCL sprain); DT Travis Johnson (re-injured left ankle); QB Adrian McPherson (Grade 1 left ankle sprain); LB A.J. Nicholson (cervical burner); LB Kendyll Pope (left hip pointer); CB Bryant McFadden (re-injured right hand).
