Seminoles Improve Standing In Final Round Of Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Men’s Golf Championship

Feb. 19, 2002

Freshman Eric Beaty shot a career-low 67 in Tuesday’s third round and finished in a tie for 18th-place in the individual standings of the 11th Annual Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at Sawgrass Country Club. Beaty’s stellar round led Florida State to a third round team total of 289 and elevated the Seminoles to an 11th-place finish in the team standings.

Beaty (Germantown, Tenn.), whose collegiate career-low prior to today’s stellar round was a 69 during last fall’s Mason Rudolph Invitational, earned the third lowest single round score of the tournament. Only two scores – a 64 by Jason Hartwick of Texas and a 66 by Camilo Villegas in round two – were better the Beaty’s during the 54-hole event. Beaty’s individual placement of tied -18th was the best of his career while his tournament score of 221 was his second best.

Junior Peter Mitchell (Miami, Fla.) also finished the tournament well as he shot an even-par 72 and finished in a tie for 44th-place. Mitchell finished the tournament with two rounds under 75 and improved his individual position by five positions during the final round of competition.

Florida placed three individuals in the top ten and claimed its fourth consecutive Mercedes-Benz team title. The Gators defeated Tennessee by two strokes. The Volunteers shot a team tournament best 277 and made up 10 strokes in the final round. Camilo Villegas finished with a six-under par score of 210 to claim medallist honors.

Florida State plays host to the Seminole Intercollegiate March 11-12 at Golden Eagle Country Club in Tallahassee in its next event.
