Seminoles In First in Oklahoma

Oct. 16, 2011

NORMAN, Ok. (seminoles.com) –
The Florida State women’s golf team – led by a trio of golfers who are all in a tie for third place in the individual standings — is in first place in the team standings after the first round of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the Jimmy Austin – University of Oklahoma Golf Course. The Seminoles are led by senior Hannah Thomson, junior Jessica Negron and freshman Laure Castelain who all carded scores of 70 and who are all only two strokes out of the individual lead. The Seminoles hold a four stroke lead over Texas A&M in the team standings with two rounds remaining to be played in the event.

Florida State, which is ranked No. 35 nationally, is four strokes ahead of No. 11 ranked Texas A&M in the team standings. The Seminoles are the only team with three golfers in the top five of the individual standings heading into the second round. Kimberly Kaufman of Texas Tech and Ket Preamchuen of Kennesaw State are in a tie for first place in the individual standings with identical scores of four under par 68.

“The girls did a really good job today despite the windy conditions,” said head coach Amy Bond. “We have to stay in the present; play tomorrow and then play for Tuesday to give ourselves a chance to do well in this tournament. I like where our team is now – but it is going to take a total team effort and some low scores like we earned today in all three rounds to stay competitive against this field.”

Thomson – the only senior in Florida State’s line-up in this event – played as a senior co-captain should as she carded her score of two under par 70. She was never above par during the entire round as she carded 17 holes at par or better. Thomas (Perth, Australia) played her best golf on her back nine as she was two under par with two birdies and seven holes scored at par.

“The conditions were tough so hitting greens was crucial,” said Thomson. “I managed to hit my share of greens and gave myself many good opportunities at birdies. I also made a lot of up downs which were critical to my success today.”

Negron (Ocala, Fla.) also finished her round with a score of 70. She enjoyed a strong day with four birdies and was never above par during the round. With three birdies on a stretch of five holes (no. seven through No. 11) Negron took herself to as many as three strokes under par during the round. Negron was two under par over her final 14 holes of the round with three birdies and 10 holes scored at par.

Castelain (Bordeaux, France) also finished with a score of 70 and is in a tie for third place with her two teammates. She played outstanding golf throughout the round with one eagle, three birdies and 12 holes scored at par. For the round, she played 15 of her 18 holes at par or better and was four under par over the last 12 holes of the round. Castelain earned the first eagle of her career with a score of three on the par five hole No. 8. With her eagle, she moved to even par for the round.

Castelain showed her enormous potential in scoring her two under par score of 70 in her first appearance and her first round as a Seminole.

Florida State will play with Texas A&M and New Mexico in the second round with its tee times beginning at 11:20 EST.
