KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (Seminoles.com) – It was a good first day for the Florida State Men’s Golf Team at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate. The Seminoles are one stroke off the lead in second place after shooting 10-under through the first two rounds (276-282).
Sophomore John Pak carded a pair of 3-under 68s on the par-71 golf course, sitting in second place among the 96 competing golfers at 6-under. UNC Greensboro’s Bryce Hendrix leads the field after shooting 11-under with a first-round 66 and a second-round 65.
Junior Jamie Li also had a strong couple of rounds, shooting an opening-round 68 followed by a second-round 70 to tie for third at 4-under. Li’s 68 is tied for his lowest in the spring season, when he also shot a 68 at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate.
In Pak’s opening round, he had a back-nine stretch where he recorded four consecutive birdies on holes 11-14. In the second round, he nearly duplicated that feat by recording three straight birdies on holes 11-13 before ending the streak with a par on the par-5, 584-yard 14th hole.
Pak’s 12 birdies through the first two rounds tie Hendrix for the most among all golfers.
UNCG leads Florida State by one stroke at 11-under. The top 5 also include East Carolina in third (-7), Davidson in fourth (-5) and Ohio State (-1) in the fifth.
Li tacked on eight birdies on Saturday, including five in the first round. If he can continue his momentum on Sunday, there’s a chance he and Pak could give FSU its first tournament with two Top-5 finishers this year.
Freshman Calvin Sierota had a respectable first two rounds, carding a 1-over (72-71) to tie for 29th. Individual Bennett Baker is tied for 37th at 2-over (73-71), while junior Greyson Porter is tied for 49th at 3-over (72-73).
Redshirt junior Jonathan Keppler is tied for 65th at 6-over.
Florida State will try to win its third tournament of the year on Sunday as it tees off at 8:30 a.m. in another shot-gun start format.
