Seminoles Lose A Heartbreaker To Clemson To End Regular Season

April 18, 2002

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team fell to the Lady Tigers of Clemson University Sunday afternoon at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The Seminoles finish the regular season with an 11-13 record and 2-6 in the ACC. The Tigers move to 13-7 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

The Seminoles and Tigers split the no. 2 and no. 3 doubles matches, leaving the decision of the doubles point on the no. 1 doubles match. Senior Jessica Balbuena and freshman Lauren Walker defeated Alix Lacelarie and Laurence Jayet 9-8 (3) to give the Seminoles the advantage heading onto singles. The other doubles win came from Christina Denny and Alida Gallovits as they defeated Anna Savitskaya and Anna Dolinska at the no. 2 spot.

In singles, Clemson jumped out in front, quickly winning the no. 3 and no. 6 singles matches. Soon after, Walker evened the score at two points apiece with a win over Ioana Paun at the no. 5 spot. Clemson’s Alix Lacelarie would soon give Clemson the lead as she defeated Anca Dumitrescu at no. 1 singles. The teams would have to wait another hour for the deciding point, as both the no. 2 and no. 4 singles matches were battles. Anna Savistkaya of Clemson proved too much for senior Alida Gallovits, giving Clemson the victory. However, to finish the match, Denny, who lost her first set 6-3 to Laurence Jayet of Clemson, came back from a 5-0 deficit in the second set to win 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-1.

“Once I was down 5-0, I realized I had to change my game. I had nothing to lose,” Denny said of her match. “I started slicing the ball a lot more and realized that she didn’t like that too much. Once I got it to 5-3, every game was a battle. I really had to fight for it.”

The Seminoles will return to action in the ACC Tournament in Raleigh, N.C. The Tournament will take place April 18-21.
