Seminoles Roll With Three Singles Victories, One Doubles Win At ITA Mideast Regionals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.Florida State men’s tennis players Sam Chang, Jonathas Sucupira and Maciek Sykut moved a spot closer to claiming the 2005 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mideast Regional Championships singles crown with three victories at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Complex Friday.  The trio advanced to the Round of 16 with play resuming Saturday morning.


The main draw, which has 16 players remaining, originally started with a 128-player singles bracket; the tournament is slated to run through Monday, Oct. 24. 


Sucupira recorded a 6-3, 6-1 upset over third-seeded Joey Atas of Duke and will move on to face Radford’s James Lloyd in the next round.  The Seminoles’ Chang tallied a 6-3, 7-6 victory against Furman’s Ben Pauluhn in the Round of 32 and will battle fifth-seeded Jonathan Stokke (Duke) tomorrow morning.  Sykut rallied over William & Mary’s Stephen Ward in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-2) to move on and face Wake Forest‘s Cory Parr.


FSU’s Ytai Abougzir fell to Martin Sayer of Radford in the Round of 32 by scores of 6-3, 6-4. 


In doubles action, Florida State‘s fifth-seeded Chang/Sucupira tandem overpowered the Lloyd/Sayer pair of Radford, 8-4, and advanced to face second-seeded Atas/Stokke (Duke) in the quarterfinals Saturday.
