TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) –
The Florida State women’s golf team, which has been ranked among the nation’s top 30 teams throughout the fall season, plays its third of three fall events as it travels to play at the 10th Annual Landfall Tradition on the Jack Nicklaus Course at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C., Oct. 28-30, 2011. The Seminoles have earned two top five team finishes so far this fall – tied for third at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the University of Oklahoma and in fifth at the Mo Morial Tournament at Texas A&M University – and will look to earn their fourth consecutive top five regular season team finish. Florida State closed out its regular season in 2011 with a fifth place finish at the ACC Championship in qualifying for the NCAA Championship tournament for the sixth consecutive year. The Seminoles will open play in the spring season at the Northrup Grumman Regional Championship in Palos Verdes, Calif., Feb. 13-15, 2012.

No. 28 ranked Florida State is joined by No. 3 Auburn, No. 4 North Carolina, No. 12 Duke, No. 16 NC State, No. 23 Virginia, No. 25 Ohio State, Chattanooga, Iowa State, Michigan State, Notre Dame, UNC Wilmington, Northwestern, Ole Miss, Purdue, South Carolina, Tulane and Wake Forest in the 10th Annual Landfall Tradition. The 18-team field that will take aim at the Par 72, 6,208 yard layout of the Jack Nicklaus course, which is playing host to the event for the sixth time overall and the first time in three years after the Tradition was held the previous two years on the club’s Pete Dye layout. UCLA won the team championship while the Bruins’ Tiffany Lua and Brittany Altamore of Virginia shared the individual championship in 2010. Altamore returns to the event as she tries to win the outright individual championship.

Second year Seminole head coach Amy Bond will bring her third different line-up of the fall season to the 2011 Landfall Tradition. Florida State will play with two seniors (Hannah Thomson and Maria Salinas), one junior (Jessica Negron) and two freshmen (Laure Castelain and Alex Milan) in the final event of the season. Negron and Thomson are the only two players who have been in the Seminoles’ line-up in each of their three events this fall. Florida State played with Salinas, Negron, Thomson, junior Malin Jansson and freshman Carlton Kuhlo in the season opener at the Mo Morial and utilized the talents of Jansson, Negron, Thomson, Laure Castelain and Alex Milan in finishing in a tie for third place at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic.

The Seminoles’ team success at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic was brought about by outstanding play from each of the five players in the line-up. The three Seminoles who played the first two events – senior Hannah Thomson and juniors Jessica Negron and Malin Jansson all improved their vs. par score by at least five strokes from the first tournament to the second. The biggest jump of the trio came from Thomson who shaved 11 strokes off of her second tournament vs. par score.

Three Seminole freshmen – Laure Castelain, Carlton Kuhlo and Alex Milan – have already displayed their future promise for certain success as Seminoles during their careers with their accomplishments in their first semesters in Tallahassee. Castelain led Florida State as she finished in a tie for third place at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic to lead all Seminoles in the individual standings. She was six strokes better than any of her Seminole teammates in her first career event. Kuhlo (in the Mo Morial Classic) and Milan (in the Susie Maxwell) both finished as the third ranked Seminole in the individual standings while both playing in their first career collegiate tournaments. Castelain is the Seminoles’ leading golfer with a 72.33 stroke average entering the Landfall Tradition.
